My wife says you're all old...
My wife has never particularly been supportive of my coin collecting hobby. I'm 51 and have been collecting coins for 40+ years. I've been married to her for 5 years. I assumed she didn't like my hobby because of the money I'm spending on coins. Wrong! A year ago I took her to a local coin show with me to try to interest her in my hobby. She's told me that she doesn't like my hobby because all the people who collect coins are old and she doesn't want me to become one of those old guys who sits at a table all day looking at coins. So she has given me permission to continue to collect coins if I'll exercise 200 minutes each week. I guess exercising would do me some good.
Just curious... Do any of you have spouses who don't understand your interest in coins?

Seriuosly, my wife understands it's part of who I am and gives me no grief. She went to a coin show with me about 6 years ago. Bless her heart, she tried, but it just wasn't for her.

She has zero interest but supports me and in no way puts any conditions on it.

I don't of course, but I'm not telling her different.
We're celebrating 40 years next month, so I might pull this off....

Fair enough! Actually she tolerates my sundry hobbies with exceptional patience.
And I got it turned up really loud.
Of course they're over 50 too, but.....
but.....
She's right, you know.
We are, however, allowed to tease each other about our respective hobbies.
I dont think its bad to collect now and enjoy the fruits of your labors later, but just dont bring it up at dinner parties, if you want to stay married.
Seriously, its a hobby where you should collect them in your 40's when you're making money and sell them in your 70's when you have more time.
After a while selling them is the problem.
yeah, were all old - maybe thats a bigger problem. Kids these days dont stare at coins the way we once did, imagining history.
My wife thought it was just a money sucking habit (sucking out of our bank account) for the first 30 years of marriage. Then about 1989 or so she decided she wanted a new couch for the living room as ours was almost as old as our marriage at that time.
Where are we going to find the money, honey, she said. Hmmmmmm, how much does a new couch cost, said I. Well about $2k for a nice one said she...oh yeah? said I.
So, to the safe I went and came back and plopped a nice shiny new 1899 dollar into the palm of her hand and told her to take it to the local coin shop and sell it and then go buy the dang couch. What will this buy me, said she....I said go get in the car and sell the damn dollar, said I.
As she was pulling out of the driveway, cussing something under her breath and just plain moaning, I called the shop....Hey Joe, you know that roll of 1899 dollars I have? Yes, said he with a lilt in his voice... Well the wife is coming down to sell you ONE. Treat her fair Joe or you will never see the other 19..
45 minuted later the garage door rises and in comes the car....Naturally I was standing in the house with the door open and waiting..
Wow, the excitement she said as she held up the check and blew right by me and headed for the safe....NOPE, stop right where you are girl...What are you doing???
How many of those do you have? I just got a check for $1,800 from your best friend Joe.
Well, now she goes with me to coin buys and sells...VERY INTERESTED now.
Love her and love the hobby.

PS: been with her 50 years this month (the 6th)
Many congrats AuandAG.
That is an awesome accomplishment for two people, especially when one is a coin collector.

Yes, but she tolerates it well.

200 minutes a week is not a bad trade off. You should be doing it anyway.

The way I see it I collect coins where some guys spend their entertainment dollars in much more sinister ways. At least she knows where I'm at (in another room).

Then sometimes it's like this, "Don't you already have a matte proof Lincoln? Why do you need another?" I'll say, "But it's a different date you see, there are several different dates." She says, "It's a penny. A PENNY! Why does a penny cost thousands of dollars?" To this, although I've tried, I can find no convincing answer.
All she asks is that I tell her an intriguing story about the coin. And that I don't complain about how she spends.
Works for me.

We've been together 35+ years and today, more knowledgeable, she just chuckles derisively.

She always takes "the long way" to accepting my obsessions. Eventually she comes around to accept it although every time I spend a large chunk of money I still get "Do you REALLY need that coin?" or "Do you really NEED that coin?" or "Do you really need THAT coin?" One of those usually.

This is why I am a Type Collector and not a Series Collector. I only WANT one of each major Type, and even now I am considering down-sizing that.
Do I NEED it? No.
Do I WANT it? YES!

My ex was always po'ed when I would buy coins. I had always wanted a nice 1876 20 cent piece, This was when I 1st started setting up at shows. Well a very nice AU walked up to my table priced at $600 and I jumped on it! Get home and made the mistake of showing it to her. How much did that cost? I told her and man o man did the sh*t hit the fan! What ended up happening was I had to put the coin up forsale or you know the consequences. So I priced the coin for $1200 thinking no way will anyone buy that coin! Well...it sold the 2nd show after I bought it. Never again was there a complaint about my coin purchases!
My wife now understands about coins since it is my business. I met her on a tour to Moscow a couple years after my divorce. We started communicating and the next thing you know I spent 1/2 a year in Russia with her on 4 different trips in a year. The 3rd trip we hit all the coin shops in Moscow. Well I was only able to find 1 coin worth buying. It was a Ch. AU 14-s nickel I bought for $20! We got back to our apartment and she finally asked....why did you buy that coin for so many Roubles? I told her I could easily get $100 for it back in the states. She looks at me with suspicious eyes and says "I think your business is no legal!"
does understand the value (now) of coins and never complains. Cheers, RickO
200 minutes huh? That's slacking. A Saturday can exceed that.

When my son was working on the Boy Scout Coin Collecting Merit Badge, my daughter made the mistake of taking him to a coin show. She was not a happy camper when she got home. Not that dad is biased, but my daughter is a 10+. She is a competitive snow boarder, models for fitness shoots, competes in Wounded Warrior type 1/2 marathon and obstacle course events, etc. Her BFF was a Dallas Cowboy cheerleader, and the cheerleader would get ticked because guys hit on my daughter instead of her. She also blows all it all off, as she is a pediatric ER nurse, with a BS degree, working on her Masters. She detests the "Barbie Doll" attitude of looks + brains = constant.
Anyway, she was NOT pleased with the "Old Men" who had to "brush" up against her, treated her like a 2 year old, and just basically slobbered over her while she was trying to help her little brother.
Never again would she go to a coin show.
Please.

Stay young and stay fit.
Sure, there's a few youngsters at the coin shows, but mostly it's the typical grey-haired, pot bellied, out of shape male coin collector.

The only coin people she considers "old" are the ones that always cranky, or just spouting off some doomsday, bunker political mumbo jumbo, regardless of age. I also happen to think the same way.
