So many varieties/errors in so little time...

I was just pondering when going through these rolls of pennies? Wow! so many, and I mean many different varieties and errors to check in just about every date of pennies! Not only the obvious of hunting down the wheaties but looking for various other coins in the spectrum as well. To think, people want to eliminate the cent. What injustice this would mean for us "roll searchers". This denomination is the only one with so, so many gems in it's arsenal. People have got to get on the bandwagon in the world of varieties and errors. If not, you are leaving a whole lot of cash on the table! Just voicing my opinion on the Penny.

When your done looking at your cents, feel free to come by and look at mine...

I haven't looked closely at any of these, but they are all 1981 and earlier cents and are in good condition and clean coins. I'm planning on buying a Dino-Lite usb coin microscope and will go through these at some point to see if I have anything worthwhile.

to some extent. it is tough looking through it all (books, money, tims, experience, tpg grading, attributing, grading nuance, die states etc etc) and good finds take a lot of coins being looked through. rare small clusters aside.

i try to look at every coin but i am not up to this task. some are.

reducing mintages is a simple and easy compromise to elimination.

i do like the numismatic aspect of coins continuing to be produced but not at the expense of our precious tax dollars when a lot of these cojns sit in jars, bags, vaults, safes etc.

like a lot of things, a fine balance to maintain.

WoW! Just think? Just one coin can be hiding in either that bucket or bag, that can be the equivalent to the face value or even more of those coins pictured? Doesn't that make you want to start searching through these? Sure, like I stated in my original thread, so many but also so little time. It might be worth it, right?

That's the fun in CRH'ing and the same reason for spending $3 on a powerball...all you need is to get lucky once! It does make me want to start searching, but looking through a loupe on all of these will make me go blind or at least get a migraine, so I'll keep dreaming there are a handful of 72' DDO's in there.

Joeycoins, while I essentially agree with you and share your enthusiasm for varieties (especially Lincolns), for many people it boils down simply to a time spent/money earned scenario.

And then there is another decision: whether to search only for known varieties, or to include the search for unknown ones.

It's a lot if fun for you and me, but many just don't have the time, energy or the eyes for it.

It takes a long time to train the eyes to the strain of looking at hundreds of coins through a high-powered loupe.

Certainly as Ricko suggested, winter is a great time to spread a few dozen rolls on the table, grab a hot chocolate or a nice dark stout and have at it!

I just shoot for the known errors/varieties. Blow right by any coin that's 2010 -2015. Wheaties are more studied as well as any more popular dates. dates that are not really famous for err./var. I just blow right by them as well. One roll would take approx. 2 minutes or faster. That's my game plan anyway.-joey

if collecting one of every date from 1/2c-$20 requires virtually super-human desire/ability/knowledge/budget/time/assistance etc, what would it take for one of every variety from 1/2c-$20? so it would also be at least one of every date.

we can do them in any grade/condition, especially where value starts soaring.

what number would this be? 20,000?
