NYINC is the Best Weekend

For me, anyway.

Actually started off on Wednesday evening, with superpsychmd, NAP, EastonCollection and two other coin enthusiasts.

Took the Professional Preview plunge this year and at a less hectic pace, strolled the bourse.

I think I saw EVillageProwler, but he was in conversation with a vendor, so I did not interrupt. MrEureka and Civitas were there, of course. Came across Zohar, two or three times. Towards the end, I met superpsychmd and stated my intention to meet again with the GCCC.

Anyway, images will be later on this month. I picked up a few varied medals that caught my eye, including a few horsies. Pocketed a fist full of (Chinese) cash and snagged a nice Carlos IV medal.

I probably will return to the show. I want to purchase at least one Gordian III bronze and something from Maurice Tiberius in the Byzantine period. I also am working on a limited type set of low mintage world. Maybe on Saturday.

Oh, by the way. NEVER take the Independent Line from Penn Station to Time Square if you want to catch the shuttle. Never!

Have recovered from a very long day on Saturday. Can't say the same thing for my wallet. Blame Schulman for that, with two magnificent medals that I just could not past by. Managed to get something for all my relatively active collections, except for my Herbemont medals. I needed some money for personal expenses, after all!

Met with Zohar and NAP. Met a coworker with her husband and son. Hubby is an avid collector of Greek and Byzantine. Besides his own interest, he was working on motivating his kid in our incredible hobby.

Considering the unusual amount of purchases this year and the freakin' issues with posting on the current Forum website, I think that I might simply set up a Flickr album for this year's purchases and establish a hotlink. Thoughts?

I'm surprised I missed this thread earlier...

Harasha - sorry I didn't see you, but next time please feel free to tap me on the shoulder and say 'hi'. I don't know much about your medals, but I'd love to have seen them anyway. Or maybe arranged to meet up for lunch, dinner or breakfast.

Same goes for anyone else. Always looking for ways to look at others' eye candy and hear some good stories.

JCM - sorry that life intruded. Maybe next year. Hopefully.

BTW, for those who can afford the time, I really recommend the Professional Preview. It's Thursday noon to close (7pm?), costs $125 and IMO is well worth it. For those serious world coin enthusiasts among us within easy commute of NYC, it's our only show of the year. It's better than CICF (bigger, and better venue) and Summer ANA (just world dealers, and less hectic). My only regret is coming in Wednesday afternoon and leaving Saturday morning, when I should've tried to come in Tuesday and leaving Sunday. It's always nice to have a nice getaway from the 'burbs into the Big Apple.

The highlight of the show for me this year, aside from newps and Z's 1486 1G, is that I went to the Chelsea Market, Smith & Wollensky *and* signed up for membership to the British Numismatic Society.

That's the kicker for NYINC. The location is not very good for those of us who don't already live in the area.

IMO a convention center venue would be preferred to the Waldorf, where all dealers could be in one room and access wasn't complicated by being smack dab in the middle of the largest city in the US. Oh well...

BRG - you're right of course that it's a matter of geography. I'm just suggesting to those who live in Pittsburg, DC, Albany and RI can easily drive in or take a bus or Amtrak. And from a bit farther out, there are many low cost commuter flights. I used to do just that between Newark and Chicago for CICF.

Anyway, just a suggestion.

I understood completely EVP. It's just not a convenient location for those of us who don't live in the general region and can't commute in for a day or two. Flights to NYC are some of the most expensive in the USA from my area, not to mention the hotel rooms are arguably the most expensive.

Add that on top of the fact that NYC isn't exactly an appealing place to visit in January (I already live in the tundra, if I'm travelling, I'm going somewhere warm!). Lastly, timing the NYINC show at the same time as the FUN show (the largest, and one of the easiest accessible shows of the year), doesn't help compel me to go.

All that being said, it's clearly a show whose main target audience are people who live in NYC proper or the general area. It is what it is -- not complaining, just offering my opinion on why it's not exactly the most appealing show from a logistics standpoint.
