Crossovers
What would you say is the typical experience with crossing NGC and ANACS coins to PCGS? Do they usually cross? What would you say is a typical crossover rate? I've had some good results and I've had some DNC coins too. If they don't cross it can be an expensive experience.

Part of it may be psychological. By not crossing the coin at the same grade, implies that PCGS is stricter or better than NGC or ANACS.
On the other hand, that is probably true.

1 for 1 crossing ANACs (MS65 Red 1867 2c piece).
3 for 3 on upgrade/regrade attempts for PCGS old holder gem seated halves (65 to 66).
There's nothing psychological about it. My crack-out and resubmit rate is far better. Some of the better NGC coins that I sold without ever trying to cross them or crack them did end up in higher grade PCGS holders. I never tried to cross my NGC 1890 PF 68 half because I felt it was impossible as technically I felt the coin was a strict 67+. It's now in a PCGS PF 68 CAM holder....pop 2 for type. Never say never.
Typical cross over rates vary by grade, denomination, metal, and which century/era. It's very, very hard to cross MS/PF 66-68 19th century NGC type coins. I'd say the rate is in the 5-15% range. If you're looking at common date MS65 Morgan dollars, the cross rate could be 50-65%. On MS65 $10/$20 Liberty gold it might be only 10-20%. The best coins are already crossed....leaving lower % on what remains. Try crossing NGC MS67 Lincolns or NGC MS65 bust halves...probably under 20-25% on those.
NGC crosses less than 50% of PCGS coins as well. Does that mean they are "tougher" than PCGS?
I've had substantially better luck cracking out than crossing.
If a problem-free grade is a sure thing then I crack it.
PCGS doesn't play it conservatively if they can see the raw coin.
Lance.
If so, likely to be more conservative if there is any question viewing it through the plastic.
Along with that, take into account if there is anything that stands out (ie....different toning, too much frost, hairlines, etc). Sure, might have been a period in time when certain things went through and got graded, but times are different now.
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
I am very leery about cracking 'em out.

conclusion that results are far better (cross, upgrade) when the coin is submitted raw.
Cheers, RickO
And I agree with RickO, my results have been better when submitting raw.
I well remember the old days when the sound of splitting plastic was louder than the conversational buzz at major shows......
