NEWP: Philip II Stater

I am not a gold coin collector, yet this one had quite a design, centering and "pop" for an 18mm, approximately 2400 year old ancient.

MACEDONIAN KINGDOM. PHILIP II, 359-336 BC. Gold Stater, 18mm, 8.60 gr. Lifetime-Early posthumous issue from Pella, ca. 340-328 BC. Obv. Laureate head of Apollo right. Rev. Charioteer driving in a biga right, thunderbolt below horse's legs. Le Rider 61. NGC graded Ch AU 5/5, 5/5.

I love it, Zohar. I'm a newbie, in fact I know nothing about ancients except that they are mesmerizing. Please tell me; how is it that so many ancient coins still exist in such a good condition?

    1) I love your forum icon

    2) I am a newbie to ancients myself. There are far more qualified members to answer yet I would say that a) Many were made b) Hoards which were found and insulated from the elements c) The main driver for my choices in these is engraver's style and overall eye appeal. You look at many to find the right one for your collecting style/focus.
