Just Threw a Telemarketer for a Loop

RKKayRKKay Posts: 3,017 ✭✭✭
Just got a call from a telemarketer, and because it's been a while since I've been able to talk coins, I let him talk. "I'm calling from [telemarketer's coin company]. Just today, I've gotten the authority to offer you 2016 American Silver Eagles. They are in PCGS holders. PCGS is the best coin grading service..."

"No thanks. I specialize in 1854 and 1855 large flying eagle cent patterns."

Silence. "1850...1890...what?"

"1854 and 1855 large flying eagle cent patterns."

"Do you collect anything else? Is there anything else in your collection?"

"No"

"Are those gold?"

"No. They're copper, bronze, copper-nickel or other compositions."

"Okay...Well, if I come across one, I'll give you a call."

"Thanks."

End of conversation.

It always sounds wittier when the story is told.

I wonder who gave him the authority to offer those coins.

I'll bet you a dollar to a donut that had you said yes, the telemarketer would have switched to the American Gold Eagle script.

In prob 1998 I bought a roll of silver eagles from an add in the National Rifleman for 3.99 a piece......I started getting calls all the time, guy suggesting I buy 10-20 gold eagles in a whack for tens of thousands of dollars. The calls just kept coming no matter what I said. Ive always passed on any of those teaser adds since.

You should have asked how much he wanted for them, and offered to sell some to him at a lower & fair price.

When I figured that a telemarketer was calling, I'd just answer the phone "telemarketing research".

After attending an NRA convention, and putting my name in a drawing at one of those gold

and silver places, I would get calls monthly. I finally told him I was not selling, nor would I

buy at their prices.... and then told him if they call again I would report it as harassment.

    That stopped it....Cheers, RickO

I often have a lot of fun with telemarketers and scammers. I just take what they say and run with it...'Silver Eagles?' Naw ain't never seen one of them birds around here but then again we live too far south and are out of the migratory patterns for them. The come up from South America in the spring along with the hawks. Now I like them red tailed hawks around, they keep the rodents down. Last year my dog got bit by a wood rat but that was in winter so the hawks hadn't come back yet. Tor up her nose a little but she got the best of the critter. You mentioned PCGS? Yeah I know that place...we used to go surfing there when I was a kid. Really good right hand break. Not too many folks knew about it so we would have it to ourselves. Sometimes the waves broke right on the beach and one time my friend Jimmy Thompson got tossed face first into the sand and hurt his eyes, had to wear eye patches for a month. We would hide his pencils in school and he would git mad at us, not that he could see what he was writing anyway. He could write pretty well even with not seeing though. Now that I think about it we did have some hawks flying around out at PCGS, maybe they was them Silver Eagles? Hard to tell with salt water in your eyes...but still not sure if I want to buy one. What do they eat? Hello? Hello?

Most of the times I get a polite hangup...the worst have been the Windows Virus scammers....a couple FU's out of them!

I have some of those outfits call me every once in a while trying to sell modern bullion or generic gold. When I say "No Thanks" and then ask what I collect I tell them "Dahlonega and Charlotte gold". They say Dahloan who and Charlotte what? What is that? Then I say, "If you don't know then you can't help me.
