I just sent this to a delaer who maintains a website.

31 of the 38 coins in your inventory are sold ones.

Why have a website?

31 out of 38 is pretty nutty. They should be moved to a sold area of the site.

As for why...to showcase the types of coins and quality that they have dealt with historically. Just a guess.

There are several reasons to have them listed. We have 2 instances on our website that we leave coins up on the site with an indication they are sold. The first is all of our coins in our "HJB Select" category. Many of these coins get snapped up very quickly so we want to make sure that people who visit our site have the opportunity to see the best material that comes through. It could motivate people to provide want lists and the like. The second is when we have a personal catalog. When we have personal catalog that highlights a set or collection of a collector we are selling on their behalf we keep sold items listed so people can see the entirety of the collection. It is especially pertinent when it is part of a whole set that is being sold off.

I'd guess a couple of reasons.
To advertise the material they deal in and to have them shown in case of a return

I can see the point of having "special" coins stay up on site, but 31 of 38 is probably carrying it a bit far. image

I usually leave coins up on the main page with the sold tag until I am sure that the person has received the coin, and is happy with their purchase. I then have an archive page that I move the sold coins to. The archive page isn't displayed on the main site because it gets too cluttered and keeping it in some order has gotten difficult, but if someone uses the search bar on my main page, the sold coins will also show up in the search.

This is the main reason I would leave a coin up, but 31 out of 38 is another matter. If the items are properly "tagged" it aids the search engines like Google in bringing people to the site albeit for disappointment. There is some strange myth out there that any traffic is better than no traffic.

The "sold" stuff gets on my nerves too. You see something that has been on your want list for a long time, and it's like the dealer is teasing you. The least they could do would be to leave the price on it so that you would get SOME information for your time.

I suppose that "on hold" is okay because there is an outside chance that the coin will not sell, but that's disappointing to see too. It's better just the pull the listing. If a dealer wants to brag about what they have sold, they should have an "archives" section.

Sold archives provide historical numismatic data.

I always assumed this was the reason. But I've seen some dealers leave a sold coin up for over 6 weeks. Delete it already!

What information is there if there is no price.

I know the exact dealer that you are referring to. If your a dealer and don't upkeep your site for weeks or even a month at a time I won't waste my time going to it. Just food for thought.

-Fundamentally, is it attractive to collectors to see that a dealer's inventory sells quickly or that they have a long sales record?

Do we benefit when we tell a girl we're dating about all the other girls we've dated?

Nowadays so many people want to cherrypick or to get value and the perception that lots of eyes are on a dealers site, and that stuff gets snatched up quickly, could be a negative.
I'd like my copper well done please!

Have an Archive tab/section and get them off of the active/available sections.

I have gotten my hopes up before on a coin that was active on CollectorsCorner only to have been sold earlier from their actual website.
