Toned 1922 Peace Dollar

toyz4geotoyz4geo Posts: 1,484 ✭✭✭✭✭
I purchased this Peace dollar, raw, about a year or so ago. I liked the color and thought it was nicely toned for a Peace dollar. The first TPG it was sent to did not agree, came back "artificial Toning". I realize that toning is often quite subjective so when I submitted my 8 free submissions with our hosts, I cracked the dollar out and included it as one of my 8. Happy to say, it has found a home.

I'll be honest and say that I am 50/50 on this one. I can certainly see how the TPG's disagreed on this one.

Pretty coin though, looks like nice EOR toning on the obverse.

Nice coin but that color doesn't add much premium, and they had it right the first time, it appear to be AT.

Looks like someone cooked it in an album trying to recreate Wayte Raymond toning.

The reverse would pass in my book. The obverse, not so much.

Agree. Too many Peace dollars are ATed and the grading services are reluctant to grade and slab even the NT ones.

If you really want to be sure, send it back 1 or 2 more times. It's 50-50 right now. The last time I had a 50-50 coin it came back bad on the next attempt too, going OK, BB, BB. The 4th try it went OK and got a 64 to 66 bump to boot.

I'm a fan of the reverse and you got a favorable grade as well.

    Many happy BST transactions

Looks NT to me... Sometimes you have to try a couple of times with PCGS with toned Peace $

I would call it AT.... but happy you got it slabbed anyway... there are other AT coins

    Teddy,

Just to play devil's advocate, would you consider it to be a success story if an artificially toned coin comes back in a certified Graded holder -- or would you prefer to see it in a Questionable Toning holder to fully disclose the possibility (or perhaps probability) that the coin has been chemically altered?

I'm not drawing a conclusion as to whether the coin is NT or AT, although IMO it appears more likely to be AT.

Case in Point: At last week's Houston SW Money Show I was able to purchase a gorgeous light brown toned fully Prooflike 1882-O Morgan Dollar in an NGC "UNC Details - Artificial Toning" holder for a great price.

Seller and I both believe the coin to be NT (probably grades 64 PL), but the TPGS allowed full disclosure of market acceptability, which allowed me to make an informed decision and IMO purchase a beautiful coin for a great discounted price.

I'm looking forward to your (and others') thoughts on this. -- Thanks!

    stuart,

i prefer devils food over advocates...any day

anytime someone sends in a coin and comes back in a graded holder...that's a success

    to me

now you could start a new thread to discuss something else...i'll chime in that one

    this thread

sheds light on the fact that sometimes a coin needs a 2nd chance is all

one sub of mine i cracked out 5 genny's and saw 4 come back graded

    the op's peace dollar

it's like something i could see being found in an old coffee tin of coins "type of toning"

    good for him i say
