50% get graded other than purchased and a study of random symmetry

While my sample size is small, it always felt that “half” of all the previously graded coins I submitted came back from PCGS has graded something other than purchased. I ran the numbers today. The coins included 2 V Nickels and 25 buffalo nickles:

27 coins submitted, of which 15 graded other than purchased, or 56%

7 upgraded and 8 downgraded

2 62s became 58s (both prior NGC)

2 58s became 63s (both prior ANACS)

5 went up one point, six went down one point/of the six, three were cross at any grade.

Composition of upgrade: 3 ANACS, 2 NCG, 2 PCGS

Composition of downgrade: 3 ANACS, 5 NGC

What is striking is that even though the % of change appears high, at the end of the day, the net of changes brings me pretty much back to status quo, at least in a purely statistical sense.

"...and a partridge in a pear tree."

Sorry...first thing that I thought of.

Some went down, some went up...depending on the dates, that could be a bad, good or neutral thing. I think I got that one covered.

Overall you are paying for an opinion.

If they were all crossovers then I think PCGS can be harder than on raw coins.
Where those old or new ANACS holders?

With old ANACS, sometimes those can go either way.
As always a 58/62 can be changed based on "cabinet friction"

All the ANACS downgrades where the old white holders. All the ANACS upgrades were in the flimsy blue holders.

Just finished plugging in PCGS Price Guide values for the 15 that changed, and at least on that metric I am about $1K up. That amount also excludes the bump from cherry picking an unattributed 19-P buffalo nickel in 63 and getting that attributed by PCGS.

at the end of the day it all comes down to the coin (and the particular grading session)

I think the only thing being graded here is your "eye".

My guess is you have a pretty good one but you value a specific characteristic over what the market values it. Those characteriostics might be surfaces and "eye appeal".
