Why eBay sellers drink - Part XXCDIv (with appologies to the Capt)

I listed a coin opening at $1,100 and had 3 bids from 2 bidders.

The idiot had bid $1100 first, and the second guy bid $1222.

Then the fool comes back and bids $1400 (I get to see the bid amount when I canceled it) a couple of days earlier.

It was at $1,247 and with 1 1/2 hours left on an auction I get a message from the 39 FB high bidder with a lame story.

I really would have liked to give him an unpaid item strike for being a liar, but there was another bidder so I decided to cancel his bids.

There were no other bids, so the guy got it for $1,100.

I had it listed a for a few weeks with no action so I wanted to sell it

What would you have done?

Dear Sir:

this is a mistake, I never bid on your coin. unfortunately I just saw that a bid was placed for the above coin and I do not even collect them. I have bought many coins through ebay and this is the first time that I found an error like this. you may contact me at 617-xxx-xxxx. I am truly sorry.

My response to him:

You'll need to cotact eBay and have them close your account since it has been comprised and is being used by someone else

Anyway, is "second chance" still an option if the buyer backs out, or did eBay get rid of that after it had become the source of lots of phishing scams? If it's still available, I would have given The Idiot an unpaid strike and second chanced it to the underbidder. If The Idiot has other coins in their feedback history, I'd also considering outing them.

You should take action against him within the ebay rules and constraints. Cheers, RickO

eBay has the second chance offer, but because there were only two bidders I think it would have been for the $1,100 anyway since the high bidder was the one who bumped it to $1,247.

Besides I would have to wait 6 days for the fool to not pay and the underbidder may have changed their mind by then.

Sure, it's all frustrating, but, play it out....

Either person wins, but had already decided they didn't WANT to win, they can always do a return, or force a return. It's ebay, we know this.

So, instead of the aggravation you have, you would then be out some shipping costs and hoping you got the same coin back, and whining on the forums about some SNAD claim; in order for them to get the return forced and not be out any funds themselves.

Before I voluntarily stopped selling on ebay (I may again if I ever feel like it), I had someone contact me asking to cancel his bid as he found the same thing a couple of dollars cheaper.

I could have forced things, but I knew it would just be returned, so why bother?

Funny, but the same thing happens to Costco, Nordstroms, and others.....people will buy something, get buyer's remorse or realize it wasn't the one they wanted, and return it.

    Live.

    Move on.

Btw.....if it were me as the bidder, and someone popped a smart@$$ comment about closing my account, even if compromised, I would know enough to know to change my password and that the account doesn't need closed. I would likely reply with an equally smart@$$ comment back to that person who told me to close the account.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

The coin sold for the minimum you needed out of it, and not the likely-future-problem-causing-idiot. That's about as good as you can hope for on ebay as a seller.
