New 1-OZ Silver Series

The reverse side of the FDR C&C Silver Medal is the closest thing to the "classic" design style of the early commemorative half dollar series that the Mint has issued on a 1-OZ silver planchet. How enjoyable would it be to have a new 'sculpted style" design issued annually in that 1-oz. size? I think it would be a major boon to the hobby. The ASE's are nice but wouldn't some variety be welcomed??

I like this medal and most of the 2015 medals that came out in the 2015 coin and chronicles set.

It technically is a classic design, I think. It's FDR's presidential medal. It was done by John Sinnock in 1945. (He also did the FDR dime and Franklin half.) The mint recently reissued the 3" bronze in addition to the silver and 1 5/8" bronze versions, if anyone is interested.

Ugh. No. Not with the design by committee approach the mint has now. More than that, I doubt the mint could justify their own commemorative series to compete with the ones Congress authorizes, nor the allocation of the blanks when they can't keep up with ASE demand now.

They could try it in bronze, but you still have that design committee problem...

It would be marvelous if the mint would return to true art on coins. Stop the PC design by

committee and allow artists free reign. Cheers, RickO

We don't need another product with an annual design change to introduce better artistry. The reason for the flat fields on current coinage is manufacturability in the various finishes that are demanded and promoted. The sculpted look you show doesn't translate as easily to the cameo proofs, reverse cameo proofs, deluxe enhanced non-proofs, and whatever other gimmickry as the "floating in space" designs do. It actually reminds me of what you'd expect to see walking into a first grade classroom with 26 different pictures of George Washington floating in space on the page all colored in different manners.
