Why vest pocket dealers drink , Part I

YorkshiremanYorkshireman Posts: 4,585 ✭✭✭✭✭
I recently bought a small collection of almost everything: Morgan & Peace dollars, 90%, 40%, silver nickels, mostly lower grade Indian heads, some foreign .....

I listed the common circulated silver dollars on my local Craigslist for a reasonable price of around $23 each. Later that day, I got an email letting me know that the melt value of each piece was about $10.85. This guy said he would graciously offer me $11 each.
I replied back that I would buy every one he had for that much.

Funny..., I never heard back from him!

I was interested in a Rolex watch for my wife and met a Craigslist seller in a Mall Food Court. The seller was clean cut but a bit high strung in his personality. A mall jeweler verified it to be legit but gave me a "look" that even to my untrained eye was obviously a tired old POS in need of repair. Politely, instead of just saying no, I told him that I would have to talk to my wife and get back to him on the watch. On the seven mile ride home I got six text messages that were increasingly agitated and angry. For all of Ebay's faults and fees, in nearly two decades and thousands of buy and sell transactions I've only had one thief who failed in his attempt to steal a $3000 Leica M9, and another that balked on import duties and returned a $400 camera. Knock on wood...

As a vest pocket dealer myself, I have lots of these stories too image

My most recent one, which actually made me laugh, was a quick email exchange.

Someone posts an ad on kijiji (same as CL) asking $120,000 for their coin collection. Extremely brief description, no photos. I email them asking for more information on the collection and ask if they'd be open to a fair wholesale offer. I get the old "I have invoices and won't take less than I paid!" line and "I don't have all day to make a list of what I have".

I politely explain that I am a dealer who needs to make a profit on what I buy, but that I do pay fair prices. I also explain that if he wants to get anywhere near as much as he wants out of his collection, he'll need to put in some work to make a list.

    He writes back:

"so ur a dealer eh, whats that supposed to give u some sort of a special status ? not interested in ur problems !"

Sounds like seller needs "special (ed) status"!

The coin world, like all retail, has it's share of strange people...it is called the human condition.

Fortunately, the extremes (picture bell curve) do not represent the majority. Cheers, RickO

How many times have you gotten a request for your 'best price' on a coin, only to be counter offered afterword....?

I always get a kick out of that one.
