Ok slab junkies, I need help with a David Hall flip....

CommemKingCommemKing Posts: 2,202 ✭✭✭✭✭
I picked this up on eBay for about $35 earlier this year. This is the only one like this I have seen. I have seen the blue David Hall flips, but never this beige colored one. Any help as to how rare or what year this may have been issued?

First one I've seen were the flip was open for the coin to be possibly switched, all I saw before were heat sealed.

I believe that I see a sealing line on each pocket of the flip?

OK I think I see the seal line now. These predate PCGS grading and are not covered in any way by Collectors Universe.

Link does not work...correct link will give you the 113 error code...

Quote from "homerunhall" on 6/5/2003 on the same subject.

'What you have is the beginning of the PCGS idea. In 1982, DHNIG started making a market in a wide range of coins and guaranteeing to buy back any coin we sold at a price comensurate with the grade. We guarantee to always have a buy price for every coin we sold. It was quite a revolutionary idea for the time (one major dealer who is still active told me at the time that this was impossible and we would go bankrupt...what happened was that he went bankrupt!) We sealed the coins to be sure they wouldn't be switched. This idea was expanded to include sonically sealed holders and coins from other dealers inventory not just DHNIG, i.e. this idea was expanded into PCGS. There are several looks to these sealed holders. The first ones were circa 1982, the last ones were probably from 1987. You have one of the later models. We did well over $50,000,000 worth of coins this way. I believe the majority of them were turned into PCGS for grading by the DHNIG customers shortly after PCGS was launched. Most of the coins we sold as MS65 will grade MS65 or 66 at PCGS today. A few grade lower, a few grade higher.'

Interesting - haven't seen that color before.

Also, the flip does not have the David Hall imprint. My guess ... ???? Suggest you contact homerunhall with your pictures....I had no idea that Proof coins were graded "Mint State"...The 3 pictures are examples of actual David Hall flips

I've been collecting them for a number of years now... not very actively, but when I come across them, I stash them away. I have a few Morgans in the brown label holders. Aside from these 3, yours is the first other brown label I've seen.

Proof coins used to be described as proof followed by a grade descriptor from business strikes. Such as what is seen above.

The sealed Mylar flips were the way the winning bidders received their raw coins through the FSNC auctions of Jefferson nickels. Sometimes the flips didn't stay sealed. The idea long time collectors would sell their whole collections through these auctions, it was an incredible time for collecting the series.

I presume the flips are PVC free?
