    A larger image would help but with what you have provided, it looks like it could be a die chip.

    Looks like a D, but there are no D's on the Obverse, and the one from the reverse is the wrong size.





    Therefore, just a well shaped die chip.

    Is the large round area raised above the surface? If so, then it is a die chip. If it is depressed below the level of the field it may be a strike thru something or other.

    Those are most excellent photos that prove (via the shadows) that the area in question is raised, and therefore the result of an unusually geometric die chip.
