Is anyone suffering through HSN right now? They are selling coins that are not coins.

I'd probably be annoying the wife by screaming at the TV too....

But, as we all know, the public has a different definition of "coin" than collectors do. (Although, they will usually agree that they are ROUND!)

The Anaheim Ducks are currently giving away MEDALS, (tokens, medallions, take your pick), of several past players. The wife tired of me trying to explain to her that the "Teemu Selanne coin" is not really a *bleeping* coin!!

I agree those are gimmicky pieces but they are coins. They are metal, made by a government (or are attributed to a country) and are denominated in a currency. Therefore they are coins. Remember, those TV guys have fantastic writers that keep them just on the ok side of legal. Ethical, not so much

They are monetized by an issuing government, which makes them coins.

True. I watch for a few minutes occasionally to get my fair share of abuse.

I hadn't seen those Christmas tree .5 gram gold "coins" before. But if I had know about them sooner, I would have absolutely tried to buy a few for the local coin clubs for prizes at their December Christmas meetings. Wouldn't pay the "retail" prices of course, but I think with a little hunting and patience they could have been bought for closer to the gold value and even though most sophisticated collectors think this stuff is garbage, many people think stuff like this is fun. If something like this called a "coin" gets someone interested in the hobby, then I think that's great, especially if they're not paying a big premium to get it and certainly if they win it for next to nothing at a coin club meeting image

My TV has setting in which is shows no picture, makes no sound, and draws (almost) no power. There's a red button on my remote that switches between this mode and the one where it shows things I don't want to see and makes sounds I don't want to hear.

Tom, I believe you nailed it.

HSN must have struck a deal with the tiny island country of Palau.

ModernCoinMart makes deals with "countries" to issue this rubbish, why shouldn't HSN?

By the way, you can always change the channel. I never stop at HSN...QVC is where it's at. image

Step away from the TV set. Aren't there some honey-dos that need a tending?
