Crossing coins to a lower grade...

MrEurekaMrEureka Posts: 24,737 ✭✭✭✭✭
When I submit a coin to cross at the same grade and it comes back "DNC" (did not cross), the results are not confusing.

But when I designate a minimum grade lower than the current NGC grade and it comes back "DNC", I always wonder if PCGS might have missed that I was willing to accept a lower grade.

Is there any way to know for sure that the graders were unwilling to cross the coin at the lower grade?

I crossed an NGC 61 to a PCGS 58. That was what I was wanting.

No. Faith alone, I guess. It means the coin would have graded lower or not at all.

A shame PCGS doesn't give us a little blurb explaining things.

Lottsa NGC's will not cross because PCGS Condemns them as being cleaned. I agree and have 1st hand experience sending in cracked out coins.

Many coins now come back 2-4 grade tiers lower, one grade tier lower is no longer a sure thing anymore.

If it was not because of grade, I recall it would also say questionable color or cleaning. A straight DNC with no comment means grade (as far as my own experience).

I have 3 NGC coins in for cross at any numerical grade.

They are toners so if they DNC it will be because they

did not care for the toning and would call them QC.

    My fingers are crossed!

I know it feels like a waste of money. But in my experience your best chance at a fair grade from PCGS on a cross is to submit it to cross at ANY grade, get it in PCGS plastic, and then do a regrade (where it is cracked and examined raw with a grade guarantee and no premium).

PCGS is always conservative on crosses. Hidden problems may lurk.

If a problem-free grade is a slam dunk then crack and submit it. Otherwise expect to pay two grading fees for a fair shake. It sucks but that's the game.

If it is imperative to get the coin in a PCGS holder then just crack it out and submit raw.

This coin was obviously cleaned, and it crossed at grade.

I crossed a number of coins to PCGS at a lower grade (usually one drop) because I want my collection consistent. It's getting there slowly, but some coins that DNC I specified a minimum grade and they didn't make it.

if you are not specifying a minimum grade, they should cross any over. The only thing would be if you said not to holder genuine coins and there is an issue that prevents PCGS from giving it a straight grade?

I believe the best method is just to crack the coin and send it in..... Cheers, RickO

I've had several PCGS unc seated coins cracked out and come back BB'd by NGC. Other times they've come back a grade higher. There's no certain rule. It depends on the coin too. My best story with the TPG's is when I sent out a muted "gem" rare date seated quarter to NGC figuring they'd be easy on it, and an eye appealing one of the same quality to PCGS because I figured they'd grade it as high or higher because of the blast. Instead of two MS65's I got back a pair of MS64's. What to do? I reversed the coins and sent them back out to the opposite service. Got back a pair of MS65's. Both were the first gems graded of either date. Done.

My thoughts on the crossing game is to make the players submit the coins as often as possible. What is gained if gets done on the first try? Agree with Ricko that in that post 2008 world of coins, the only logical method is to crack out graded NGC coins as long as you are willing to accept the potential of never getting it back in a holder again. Sometimes, that potential is very low and worth the risk.

This is exactly right. The cheapest way is a crack-out. DW encourages this, he's said before. The risk is a "genuine" instead of a returned DNC and NGC plastic.

My way is to sell off my NGC graded coins, and then only buy PCGS graded coins.

I'm okay with graham and soda crackers. Plastic crackers are my favorite, though. PCGS , NGC, ICG, PCI, ANACS….. all crackable.

It's no different than asking how do you know for sure the grade is right and it's not a mechanical error or an oversight? It's obvious when an MS coin says PR, but it's the same exact underlying technical error that would have the label say MS62 instead of MS63. How do we know upgrades don't happen as a result of errors on the part of graders or handlers? The first time or second time or Nth time...

Faith... Which is the only logical answer, since there is no 24x7 video surveillance published of what goes on inside a grading room image

I have not had any success crossing two IHC proofs (1903 PR67BN and 1870 PR67RB CAM) at the same grade. I resubmitted the 1903 to cross at 66.5 and it again did not cross. Good advice on this thread and I may crack out the 1903 and submit it, but have concerns that PCGS may consider the toning to be Questionable Color. The 1870 is the only 1870 of any color to be in a 67 holder. I For that reason, I would like it to be in a 67 PCGS holder, but would rather have it in it's current holder than a 66.

Eventually they may just have to become high end dupes if I want to complete my registry set.

Faith moves mountains. David Hall once wrote me a personal note which read , "Joe, we won't cross this coin at any grade , only because of the monetary loss you would realize". or words to that effect. (IIRC it was a 1912 S $5 Gold Indian in AU 53 in NGC, but more like an XF 45. ) I believe I used the presidential review to find out what the deal was, at that time…. Still not smart enough to fight my way out of a brick & mortar shop.

That gave me the faith/confidence I needed to renew my membership every year since.
