I only have an 1852-D for my type set, so maybe I need to keep an eye out for these.

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
1842 $5 LL
1858-S $5
1842 $5 SL
1847-O $5
1859-S $5
1848-D/D
1842-O $5
1840-O $5 [for accuracy, I used to own this one. I placed the 40-O as a late add in this list replacing the 1860-S I think. In the 1848-D/D commentary I say I own all but that issue which is technically incorrect. I sold this coin to Doug as part of the deal for the 42 $5 SL.]
1846 $5 SD
1859 $5
Here is my 1842-D $5 LD which Doug mentions he would replace the 48-D/D with. He is probably right!

Enjoyed reading the article, Thank you
wow...nice!
i agree. this is why i believe that select pioneer gold (e.g. bechtler, moffat) is essential to any set from this time period because it was extremely pivotal as well...and influenced the creation/operation of these branch mints, among many other things!
finally, here's the milas/steveben '59:
i am happy to see it is included in your excellent write up! thanks for the great read.

However, you might want to ask DW to correct this boo-boo before someone else notices it:
The fact that four mints were active during the 1839-1866 time period

Well done!

Thanks for the post.
Great read. Thanks.

Outstanding and well written article. As an aside, do you think that the fact that four of your ten coins on the list could be considered die marriages or varieties keeps the collector base (and value) suppressed?
Good question and I considered that.
In the case of the 42 $5's I think not. They are both quite valuable relative to other dates in the series and when their populations are put together they remain the rarest date until 1862. they have been long recognized and included in the series list. I think in their case it is a matter of the demand for Philly $5's.
In the case of the 1846 SD I would agree.
For the 48-D/D it is more that it is so rare that I think it's rarity works against it, both from available pricing and demand. While it is included by most Dahlonega collectors in the series as a separate issue in the series and not a variety, many will skip it because they just cannot find one. Doubling the population may in fact also double the price. Many are held very tightly in North Georgia.
