Scammer roll seller on ebay

AUandAGAUandAG Posts: 25,027 ✭✭✭✭✭
UNC roll?

BS is what I say. Bank did not begin as 1st Natiional Bank of Reno until 1929. Hmmmmm, a cc trade dollar on one end some 60 years after they were released??

Nah, I call foul.

Will go to the moon if ebay lets it.

  • Hey Bob I put a bid in on the roll and hope I am the only one from the board who does. If I win the roll I will be taking it to my buddy at the University of Wisconsin. He has agreed to test the ink on the roll and let me know when it was manufactured along with an X-Ray of the roll. If it comes back with modern ink on the roll I will be able to prove his scam. I will be paying with a credit card through PayPal so that will also offer some protection not much but some if I prove it is a scam. He also stated that radio fluoroscopy would be helpful on the paper itself to see what it is made of. Not sure how it all works but he said they would be able to tell with a couple tests even when the paper was made.

Thes roll scams are really angering me as of late and I just figure I would try to do something if I can.

I am always amazed that people bid one these...these types of items have been listed on eBay for a long time and often go for a lot of $. I've not seen the trade dollar combination before but I guess you have to be inventive and come up with new products.

There was a thread the other day about why there seem to be so many thieves in numismatics....looking at the bids on the sellers items I would have to say (and kindly) because there are so many knuckleheads in numismatics. I learned long ago that a free lunch is not going to happen and it seems a lot of folks still have that lesson to learn. Unfortunately it is bad for the hobby as a whole IMO.

Just a couple of random thoughts...

Previous mention of xray analysis of a roll for modern signatures.

Next, recovery of DNA from nooks and crannies of coins struck in 1795. Identification soon thereafter.
  • Sorry guys someone with a big account bid it up over 2500 already. I can't front the money at this time. It would have been neat to see the results though. I have seen them authenticate some autographs from the 1800s doing the same thing they said they would do onthe ink and paper, they also use the process on old paintings to see if they are forgeries.

Christos...I am glad this went out of your price range...I am 99.99% certain you would have been disappointed in the contents of the roll and that the paper / ink would have turned out to be more modern.

The FNB of Reno was liquidated on January 2, 1896, and was acquired by Farmers & Merchants NB of Reno under that title in 1903. Thus, the BS about bank documents accompanying these rolls to indicate operation of FNB of Reno in the early 1900's is totally fabricated.

Furthermore, the business strike Trade Dollars were demonetized by Congress in 1878, so no commercial bank with a reputation to uphold, including The FNB of Reno or even Farmers & Merchants NB would have placed Trade Dollars in to paper wrapper rolls, even if they existed that early. The general public completely shunned Trade Dollars by 1878, with the exception of a small segment of the public in and around San Francisco.

And In conclusion - the simple fact is that the technology and demand for roll wrapping machinery for coins was non-existent in the 19th century and well into the 20th century.

BTW - I've written a lengthy guide blog regarding bogus claims of vintage paper wrapped rolls in the eBay U.S. Silver Dollars category, if anyone should care to review it and comment - or add your own guide. If ebay chooses to ignore the shameful practices of these sellers, about the best thing one can hope for is to educate the masses as directly as possible - in the same venue where they are shopping.

    Unbelievable, it's over $11,000 now.

One of the non CC rolls just closed at $2,700 or so.

If I didn't have morals, I'd be a wealthy man.

Thank God I do and that I sleep well at night.

I reported all of the paper roll listings to eBay, and got the auto-response claim that they would "investigate". Bah-hah ! They'll investigate how much money they expect make on fees, period. I recognize the location as the same seller who operated under a different user ID until the neutral and negative feedback started piling up.

Hmmm, somebody was fishing and bid is back down to $6,600 but it will take $11k or more to get it per the fisher.
