I couldn't pass on this 1917 type 2 Standing Liberty quarter. The colors delivered a knock out punch at the very first glance so, I bought it. This is NOT my series but I do believe it's a tad of a weak strike and is an uncirculated piece as I don't really see any rub. The luster is really strong and again the color is beautiful.

I think you are doing fine. This coin is either AU58FH or AU62FH. It is an envelop toning and color is right to me.

The knee is somewhat flat but this could be a striking issue. Also, the high point of the wing is touch of flat too.

If you want it in an uncirculated grade holder, NGC is the way to go.

I'm thinking that she's probably an eye-appealing AU-58 based on what I interpret from the photos to be some light rub/wear on the high points of the obverse (Miss Liberty's hair, shield & chest area) and some stray circulation hairline scratch contact marks within the reverse field to the left of the eagle's right wings (7:00-9:00 area).

It is an attractive coin. Those colors on the reverse look questionable if you ever try to get it graded.

If the price is right, I'd be comfortable with it, unless I submitted it.
Then I'd be a little bit worried about Questionable Color results.

I would be concerned that it may have been ATed to cover up hairlines. Seen it many times on this series in higher condition semi-key and key dates. Knock on wood.

Like I said, I'm way out of my comfort zone but I like this piece. I have no idea what it'll grade but I think AU-? is about right although I don't see a break in the luster. If it's a strike issue, again I not the guy to make the call. The color seems right to me but I mainly collect nickel alloy coins

silver might throw me off.

One of the most beautiful Standing Liberty Quarters I've ever seen. Still, I probably would have been even further out of my comfort zone than you were, worrying that it would end up too good to be true, that is, original. Last raw coin I bought -- maybe 20 years ago -- got body bagged. Even though that had a happy ending, with the ANACs "details" price being about double what I paid, I was so unnerved that I never bought a raw coin again. Anyway, I wish you well with this one. Let us know what the TPG says.

The strikes on the type 2s were all over the place. You have what might be a FH there but missing detail in the chain mail and knee which is common. (to me, a flat knee is more bothersome than a flat head) Won't comment as to grade or not as I can't see the surfaces under the toning, but there are plenty of 1917 ty 2s available in UNC and you may very well have one here. Pretty coin.

I too would worry a little about what a TPG might have to say about the color, but it's pretty, regardless.

I'll cross my fingers for you if you submit it. Who knows, maybe it would pass scrutiny.

If you didn't pay a lot, and you like it, it makes a nice album coin.

It is not one I would have been comfortable buying raw for anything more than $25 or so (way below value...just tells you how I view it I guess).

I am in the AU camp.

I am in the "questionable" toning camp as well.

I think the coin looks high AU (might be MS, can't tell due to the toning) but I have problems with the color esp. on the rev; as the old carpenter said, "somethin' ain't plumb" (IMHO)

I pretty much agree with what has been said. It isn't hard to find toned SLQs, but it's very difficult to find nicely toned ones that don't look "off". Would be nice to see it in person. Photos can lie.

i'd hold some reserve on it straight grading as i sent it in

as this example should get a chance or 2

such a pretty design

beautiful coin here even though i like a well struck type 1 a lil better

for some strange reason

hopefully they didn't beat you up on a price that adds to its beauty

I'm in with the AU camp. Color is questionable. Or....at least many will question it.

Liberty's right leg is plateaued from just above the knee to the foot. Some of that may be strike. But, I'd say mostly wear. It's still an appealing coin.

Completely understandable. Obviously, to you, and I would bet others, it is nowhere near a $25 coin, which is why I said that "to me" that would be my limit.

I have purchased some coins that have had similar feedback and, given my experiences, I have since stepped down my comfort level for certain things. And, I am sure I have overlooked/bypassed some nice purchases in the meantime.

My post wasn't meant to be a slam at you, or the coin at all, as everyone is different.

An AU coin that has been cleaned and then re-toned IMHO. Looks pretty but not sure that it is TPGS acceptable.
