    I don't consider dark toning to be fitting the definition of crust.



    To me, a crusty coin is one that has some old dirt / foreign material lodged within the devices that isn't actively degrading the surface of the coin.



    Like the 1812 Bust Half posted above.



    There is a distinct difference between the "skin" of the thin film interference of surface toning, and the "crust" of foreign material above the surface of a coin.

    I think you may want to take a moment and describe "crusty" since many of these examples are not what comes to mind when I think "crusty."

    Hey, welcome to the down and dirty side image. Folks, I agree these days everybody call any coin with a little brown "crusty." This looks like a dirty example..... and besides her heart is in the right place. I want to say something but I'll get in trouble for it. But I'll do it anway..... I'd rather see this coin, then the "toned silver eagles.imageimage

    Here is a crusty coin which usually comes proof like, and ugly with deep abrasions in exactly the opposite, crusty and original.

    No spam intended, but I fully expect whoever buys this coin will dip it before submission to obtain the highest grade and designation.

    No spam intended since it's on ebay. I do, however intend on making this point clear:
    Some people hate crust and tarnish so much, they cannot wait to "dip it".

    There's a dunking booth for them, in the after life. (just kidding children, and faithful believers)
