I've seen that coin in person and I must say the pics do not do it justice. I doubt a more original, well-rounded VF example of this rare variety exists.

Thanks. My primary goal is a marriage set, but I have been working on die states as well. It's an awful disease.

It's O-114 which is an R5. It is the "large letters" variety and since it's in the Red Book, it is very popular and pricey.

The coin is graded VF-30 by PCGS and has a green CAC sticker. The coin is just marvelous in hand and a great match for my set.

Just noticed something that peeked my curiousity. Looking at the position of the prongs in the pictures, it looks to be a rotated die. Not knowing much about bust halves, is this a common occurence?

Absolutely. Part of the fun in collecting early federal coins is all the slip-ups. Rotated dies, off-center strikes, clashing, graving errors, mechanical doubling due to loose die screws. Even upside down and misplaced punches.

1823 is famous for its atrocious 3's and produced some fun varieties. There's the broken 3, patched 3, ugly 3...even the tampered-with 3. The 3 punch had not been used in 10 years and the new style punch, with its curvy upper loop (as opposed to a straight top 3 last used in 1813,) is believed to have been defective. But deemed good enough. It was all downhill from there.
