With the help of friends and family, Otha Anders wheeled in 15 water jugs full of pennies to the bank in Ruston. The final count: 513,614 pennies, which comes to a little over $5,136...
I'll bet he never checked the dates....

He saved for a lifetime and is going to use it to pay a dentist office bill. That should tell you something about the worth of a half-million cents.
Or how bad his teeth are.

That could be just 1 or 2 teeth these days.

I have a 5 piece gold crown and bridge assembly in my yap. It has a small hole worn into one of the crowns. $5K or so to replace it sounds about right. I shud start wheeling jugs of coins into his office.
Why won't his employers give him dental insurance, what a shame ......
Didn't see where it mentions he had dental insurance. . . may have missed it.
Most dental insurance won't cover 100% of dental charges. If I replaced my 5 piecer today my OOP share would probably be $4K or more.
His homeowners policy wouldn't over his cent hoard.
Sounds to me liked he worked his whole life.

Where does it say he doesn't have dental insurance?

Anders, 73, reportedly supervises in-school suspended children for the Jackson School Board. He says he finally cashed in because his insurance policy won't cover the collection, according to the News-Star.

If he is full time (FTE), I am sure he has dental insurance but it generally doesn't cover 100% besides checkups. My guess he works part-time in a non-benefited position.

Just got the same rig. Cost is double ($10,000) where PCGS is located (Newport Beach).

Depends upon how bad ya like to eat. A root canal with a crown can go $3K I suppose.
My insurance max with my plan is $1K per year.
Perhaps if he searched them first, he could have a complete set of gold teeth and drive to the dentist in his new Rolls Royce
One could hope.
More likely the man would piss away countless hours, have to wash his hands with industrial cleaner and have new chiropractor bills to contend with after weeks of being hunched over looking at copper / zinc slugs.
You might get more value using the coins as some sort of landfiller for a landscaping project.

guy accumulated a half million cents since the sixties?
No collecting involved.
There has got to be a 1955 DDO in there somewhere.

Does PCGS slab that kind of crusty gold?

My wife just recently had to have a 4 tooth bridge. We almost went to Costa Rica! Did help us Negotiate the price down a little from $7800! I called Costa Rica(an American Company) and asked how much they could supply the bridge for. It was less than $100 per unit(tooth). I then asked my dentist how much they were costing him. He replied it was....my memory is a little vague but somewhere approaching $1000 per unit(tooth)!
After Obamacare causing my Health insurance rates literally double next year for a plan that is not as good as I have I am thoroughly disgusted with the ripoff healthcare in this country.
I have a friend looking into doing invetro fertilization. The cost here is somewhere around 20K per try. In his wife's country it is $800!

Well there are those who let their teeth go to hell for whatever reason and wonder why they can't get em fixed for $100.

Do you suppose he "searched" them before throwing them into a bucket or barrel?
Dental insurance is most often very weak and in the case of most seniors, non existant.
Even with decent insurance, my cracked teeth and crowns cost thousands!
I wonder if there were any goodies in that hoard?
Happy, humble, honored and proud recipient of the “You Suck” award 10/22/2014
it was likely an issue since he had a pending need for cash. Cheers, RickO
