I don't care for the color of the toning on this piece. I don't find it attractive.

As I have said before, I'm glad I don't have "toning disease."

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Interesting - thanks for sharing. Its amazing what some of them will pay for certain things while other items struggle to even bring CDN Bid. Did they just have the perfect storm of toning fanatics driving up the bidding? CDN Bid for the coin is $50, I probably would have fallen out of the bidding at $55.....

I hope the new owner enjoys his coin. I would have spent the $2500 on a PCGS MS65 Saint and PCGS AU58 $10 Indian assuming I was buying them at CDN ask. When you think what sorta nice material the 2500 would buy vs a coin that only bids for $50 (CDN) it is mind boggling. I guess to each his own lol.

Assuming the cause of the toning was from 19th century workers answering the call of nature (as proposed by a prior poster), wonder how amused they would be to find out someone paid that kind of money for a coin they......quite a chuckle I bet.

<< <i>Im just stating my theory. Thes bags were probably moved stacked and stored many times. 19th century men were not too picky where they took a leak. No doubt they were under guard doing this hard work and unlikely to get a "hall pass" to go to the little boys room. I think this is why toning is mostly one sided on these... This toning isn't an act of God it's the result of random localized contamination of a canvas coin bag by an identical strongly reactive liquid possessed by people in contact with these bags during their storage during various eras in different location. ie.: Pee >>

Not all coin in the same grade command the same price.
Some are worth much more and others no so much.
Live by price guides an your collection just may be below average.
Quality coins bring above price guide money are normally better coins.

In all seriousness I could imagine getting offers of about $150-275 for this coin shopping it around to toner specialty dealers on a major show bourse.

Low MS monster toners are really collector coins vs. dealer coins for bidding purposes. I'm convinced that the best way to sell these is a low starting price ($1) and then see who shows up.

I also think collectors new to monster toners often focus on color much more than grade. I certainly did when I first started looking at these coins. Now I recognize that more people care about both color and grade.

I like the look of this coin. It has very nice elevation chromatics, lots of color and the shift between colors on the left and right sides of the face is very nice. It would be even nicer if there was more pull away toning. I can see people wanting this one.

I'm not a stranger to these types of items. I went to sell a 5 figure item earlier and was told by the dealer my asking price would never be met and I should lower the asking price by over 20%. I said don't worry - I'm sure someone will come along (just like me) - and sure enough, someone did. Of course, you have to know the market. Some things just won't sell at certain prices and some things need a good run up to generate excitement.

Seattle is close to the mark. I would then expect to see a price sticker of between $400-$600 on it. Several of our SLC show dealers have some comparable quality toners, and that asking price would be right in the ballpark. No offense to GC or the buyer at all . . . just seems that is about the buy-sell spread for this type of toner. The grade is a bit lower than usual for a bag toner of this vivid character, but certainly accurate. Nice coin.

Wonder if it is time for Bag Burn to make an appearance? Hmmmmmm . . . . nah! The toning market is here to stay. No rush.

I wonder what the highest dealer buy offer for that coin would be if it were to be walked around the floor at a major show?

Most dealers wouldn't pay more than about $100 for a piece such as this.

I agree. Which is why I mentioned low MS monster toners are collector coins, not dealer coins. Don't sell these to dealers.

I guess CAC would make one of their "sight unseen" offers on it.

Most not. But again, there are some specialty toner lovers that will. I've sold similarly toned rainbow MS63 PCGS common date Morgans at past shows like Long Beach and ANA for the $250s.

    Funny . . . All of my 66$ coins are worth about $30 ! ! !

Something that strikes me as a lil strange with this coin is how baggy the toned side is and how clean the reverse is.
I would have thought it would have been visa versa.

Need the following OBW rolls to complete my 46-64 Roosevelt roll set:
    1947-P & D; 1948-D; 1949-P & S; 1950-D & S; and 1952-S.
Any help locating any of these OBW rolls would be gratefully appreciated!

I would offer $75 for it.The hope would be to make $100 quick profit by selling for $175.I would go no higher than $75.The way to sell something like this is to get two toner collectors duking it out for the piece.Zooming onto Liberty's CAC approved cheek is not for the faint of heart.

    $2500?image

I'm thinking that my $75 offer and "not a penny more" would be violently spurned.

I'd love to zap that thing with an X-ray fluorometer... I suspect chromium.

CAC's gotta have one of these in-hand.. or not?

Does the Sniffer include an X-ray fluorometer?

BTW, the MS62 I was thinking of is PCGS 28665516. It sold for $1,525.00 back on March 2, 2014. With a PCGS Price Guide value of $52, that's still a nice price, but not as impressive as this piece.

AT101 - apply the sulfur toning on the heavily marked side to cover it up......leave the unmarked side pristine.

That coins toning is going to look much different in a few years.
