PCGS Secure Plus or NGC CAC? What do you prefer?

PCGS Secure Plus or NGC CAC?

I have wondered about this. I have NGC/CAC coins that wont cross and Secure Plus that wont sticker. I really don't care if I like the coin.

For me it really about the coin but what do others think?

I always buy the coin, not the holder/grade, but I pay what I think it's worth in PCGS plastic at a would-be PCGS grade, as 100% of my collection is PCGS (other than Ancients, because PCGS doesn't grade them).

I also have some coins (about 30%) that didn't sticker but I really like the coins, so I keep the coin. I appreciate everyone's opinion but I always side with what my own eyes see image

Secure Plus has an advantage now that TrueViews ($17) are incorporated into the price, which is $5 less than PCGS Standard ($12 + $10 TrueView) when having reholdering service accomplished.

I don't care for the present PCGS edge view gaskets. I prefer the solid gaskets, I think that they are cleaner and less distracting.

I too like Old NGC Holders (fatties, soap box, no-line) because I have seen some nice toning on the coins.

By all means, if CAC likes it too...so much the better!

I'm a bit confused about what you wrote above (maybe a typo?), but if I liked both coins equally: I'd probably lean towards NGC/CAC. For what its worth, my reasoning is that two different professionals have come to the same OPINION of the coin.

Apples and oranges comparison. The sniffer vs. CAC's eyes for doctoring I guess is a parallel but Secure Plus has nothing to do with validating the coin to be solid for the grade.

NGC / CAC all the way.

Then I can cross it over to PCGS. I'm not so paranoid so I don't care about Secure Plus.

If an NGC/CAC coin meets my standards, more than likely one day it will cross and re-sticker. And the price is probably lower.

Can't say the same for the other.

...oh yeah...the sniffer that accompanies Secure Plus. Not panicked by it.

I would go with the PCGS coin, whether or not it was in a Secure Plus holder. Too many NGC coins with the CAC sticker will not cross to PCGS. The Secure Plus means only a little to me. Honestly, I no longer even look to buy NGC coins, in any series I collect. My days of attempting crossovers have ended.

Yes to this! Secure plus does nothing for me either.
  • I think the clear PCGS holders are nicer than the NGC white holders because there's a better view of the coin. Much more presentable.
    I love the 3 P's: PB&J, PBR and PCGS.

The PCGS coin, for the reasons Mozin cited.

And FWIW, Secure Plus has nothing to do with the quality of the coin.

NGC CAC for me, I could care less if PCGS has their cool shield on the slab. Stickers are better anyway.

Why attempt to crossover any coin? There is always going to be negative bias if the coin is considered in another TPG's holder. This goes both ways and is unavoidable, because even if they do their best to grade without bias, when they see a coin in another TPG holder they can't help but grade it with bias. So that of course means many NGC holdered coins won't cross at the grade at PCGS, just like many PCGS holdered coins won't cross at the grade at NGC. Wouldn't matter if they see the grade on the holder or not, they are going to grade it harder and hence crossovers will have a high failure rate. Hence, submitting raw is the only way to get an unbiased grade. I have done that with quite a few coins to compare grades for a given coin between both TPG's, and for the series I collect (bust mostly) I can't see any difference between the two. CAC on the other hand is excellent at evaluating visual evidence for doctoring and cleaning that the TPG's appear to be looser with. Any coin with a CAC sticker on its holder is thus a coin you can have more confidence in for lacking those human assisted enhancements/adjustments. Hence, CAC over a Secure Plus any day of the year.

Coin quality and appealing first. If they are nearly identical and same ballpark price, then I always take PCGS coin first since PCGS coins save me the trouble of crossover. If the coin can speak itself, then it is about $15-$20 + postage to get a bean image

Why would it matter? As long as the coin is seen by an astute collector.....well, by at least two astute collectors......that's the only way a collector's coin will see good money. But it has to be a collector's coin. Otherwise it just becomes a commonly traded commodity.

This question is only important to those who prize the name on the holder more than the coin. I'm far more interested in the coin not the plastic around it.

    I prefer PCGS with CAC.

I do like old NGC slabs with CAC but have been trying to cross my newer NGC/CAC slabs to PCGS and have had a 75% success rate but now that PCGS charges an extra surcharge to cross, I have slowed down such crossing.

But less than 1% of my slabs are newer NGC/CAC slabs.

The old black and all white NGC slabs are keepers as well.

I do not own any PCGS secure slabs.

I prefer the nicer coin -- which has little if anything to do with the brand of plastic or the little shiny stickers that may be attached.
