Have you had Cataract surgery? *****UPDATE!*****

ambro51ambro51 Posts: 13,949 ✭✭✭✭✭
Age 60 came in whit a hazy unfocused fog. Now you know why I make typos. So surgery on the right is oct 12 and the left 2 weeks later. I'm looking forward to the results but kind of scared too. Now please my lovely "devils advocates" don't reply here only folks who are happy and pleased.

My mom did a few years ago. The first thing she noticed was how bright colors were again. She still has to wear glasses, but her overall vision was improved dramatically and she's very happy.

My granpa had this operation and I remember he said that it helped, but he was still better seeing when he was 16 years old.
    Good luck.

Mom had terrible vision. Almost legally blind in one eye. After the cataract surgery she could read a newspaper at age 92, without glasses.

I had both of mine done in my early-50s. Piece of cake; I'd take that procedure over a trip to the dentist any day.
    When in doubt, don't.

Had both eyes done a couple of years apart and had absolutely no problems nor
issues. My vision after the surgery improved 500%. I am 67 years old and cannot
imagine not having it done. I am sure there are horror stories out there but I know
of none. My parents and even one grandparent had the same surgeries in the 70s
with nothing but success. I know it is scary especially if you elect to do them both
at the same time. All of ours were performed at the Johnson
City, Tn Eye Clinic, one of the best in the world. I wish you the best of luck.

there are videos on the youtube if you want to see what goes into it. looks pretty straight-forward so long as one keeps a steady hand and has plenty of experience.

ive not had this done so have no experience to offer.

It's 2015, we can practically 3D print you another eyeball if you needed. I've only heard good things about the procedure. Let us know how it goes.

Peace and good health. And thank ___ for good medical personnel…. not meds , per se., rather procedures that work.

My dad had both eyes done about 5 years apart, the most recent being 2 years ago. He wishes he would have had them done alot earlier. He says before he had them done it was like looking thru a small drop of tar on your eyeball. Now he can see all 3 colors of a redlight.

I saw a TV documentary once where the ancient Egyptians were thought to perform the first cataract removals. They hollowed out a small metal tube with a sharp point on one end and would pierce the eyeball and suck out the cataract.

Thank goodness for modern medicine. Good luck with the surgery.

The potential for problems is real, but VERY slight. You'll probably wish you had done it sooner. Piece of cake. I don't do eye surgery but I work in the OR next door and talk with those guys quite a bit. They've virtually perfected the procedure.

My ophthalmologist said I'm at the beginning stages but too early to do it yet. I'm actually looking forward
to it as she said they can correct my vision to 20/20 at the same time....I hate my glasses!

I had 'em done last summer-age 65. Vastly improved eyesight-heavy fog is now gone. Surgery is not a big deal-took maybe 20 minutes and no pain.

I had this done about 1 1/2 years ago. The thing I found, in my case, was how saturated the colors, of everything, were afterwards. Also, in my case, I had to wear sunshades for about 3 months, if I went outside, as it was so BRIGHT! I swear, I thought the earth had moved closer to the sun and no one told me about it. image My vision had much improved, I still need glasses but with much milder lens. Legally, I can drive without my glasses but the glasses improve sharpness a little better.

As an example of how saturated the colors were, before the cataract surgery, I was editing some photos, but after it was done when I looked at these photos again, the colors were way to bright. I had to go back and reedit them again. image

I had both eyes done last fall. I was horribly nearsighted and mildly farsighted before the surgury. I could see small objects well (like a coin) if held close to my eye, however (without my progressive lens glasses).

The surgury was a piece of cake (except for the extremely bright light with a dialeted eye). A day after the surgury I noticed how much brighter the colors were with the new lens, and my distance vision was almost fully corected. My near vision was slightly better, but I could no longer see small things up close (like a coin date). Glasses didn't help the near vision much.

A few weeks after the surgury I started getting "floaters" in both eyes; they're a nuissance but not horrible. A month or so after the surgury I began to notice my vision was progressivly "fogging up"; I had to get another minor laser treatment after 8 months to get rid of the scar tissue, but now all is good again.

From a positive standpoint I can now see quite well without glasses; previously I was blind as a bat. From a negative standpoint I can't read the date on a coin smaller than a half dollar without a magnifying glass.

I had it about a dozen years ago and had implants. Before I could not find my car without glasses . Now I drive my car without glasses. I only need glasses to read. You will be fine. image

A few years back I was a part of the medical team of ophthalmologists doing pro-bono work in Honduras. Saw over 60 of those surgeries in just 3-4 days. While there are risks, the surgery itself is relatively straight-forward and the difference is nearly instant. People in post-op the next day were able to see after being nearly blind for decades. You will most likely end-up with glasses afterwards, but your vision will improve dramatically.

    Having it done next week.

Be advised that they now have a choice of lenses, one for people who were farsighted, one for people who were nearsighted and one for people who were astigmatic. However, my insurance will only cover the traditional farsighted version, so I am paying extra to get the lens best for me.

    Ambro,
My grandmother got hers done in her late 80's. She lived with aunt. My aunt was slightly annoyed that because grandma had such good vision after surgery, aunty now had to keep the house cleaner. image It was a great success.

So happy to hear that all went well!

Just yesterday, I was told that I now have cataracts! Not quite to the point where they need surgical correction though. Time will tell...

I worked for an excellent eye surgeon a few years ago and did his photography and video work. Watched thousands of procedures.
The precision and skill of his steady hands (even under microscopic magnification) was astounding!

Since the cataracts and vision loss are very gradual, post operative results can be very dramatic. There were many cases in which- when the bandages were removed one day post-op, the improvement was so pronounced that patients were 'moved to tears' with the results!
    Cool to see!

So glad for you Ambro! As a fellow photographer, I know how much vision and resolution mean to youimage

  • Had it a year ago. Results even better than I'd expected. Slightly surprisingly "assembly line" with many patients, but that's because this works. Oh, by the way, "cataract surgery" is a euphemism. It's actually lens replacement surgery.

Modern surgery is amazing. I had internal heart repair last April. It was ablation of the AV junction by catheter. It was an outpatient procedure (because I already had a pacemaker).
