I found a Beautiful Peace dollar this weekend !

Check this sucker out.
I went to a local show this Sunday, It's relatively small, maybe 20 dealers.
I found a group of capital plastic square holders in a dealers case off to the side. He didn't have any lamps on his cases but there were about 8 of these capital holders with various coins in them. Most had some type of toning, there was a Morgan in there that was hideously ugly... dark splotchy spots, etc. Then there was this Peace, a 31-S Lincoln, another Morgan (which I also bought) an Indian cent, etc.
The Peace dollar caught my eye, I asked to see it and noticed right away it was an electric blue. I had to use another dealer's lamp to get a closer look at it and sure enough, dripping with luster!
Long story short, this Peace and one other Morgan had pretty remarkable color so I bought them both. The guy told me they had come into his shop from an estate appraisal he had done the day before.

I think it's an UNC example. The reverse eagle feathers just may have evidence of wear... I'm back and forth on that. Feel free to share your thoughts on the grade and/or toning.
I moved the lamps around a bit on the obverse so you can see it from a few different angles.

Very nice. Way above average toning for a Peace dollar.

Are you going to try to get them graded and slabbed? People pay crazy money for toning like that.

I've seen cherished coins way darker than that....

Pretty coin. Most likely MS as it appears to be fully lustrous and frosty. It looks to be relatively free from distracting marks too.

I think the toning is a bit past what is desirable, bordering on environmental damage (a dip would likely reveal impaired surfaces). I doubt it would straight-grade, but I don't see this bringing huge money in or out of a slab. All the same, it's a perfectly nice one to keep and enjoy.

Looks MS and the color very well might have happened on its own; but I think it would get QT if submitted.

Worth a bite out of the grading apple....risk/reward ratio is right.

  • FlatwoodsFlatwoods Posts: 4,248 ✭✭✭✭✭
I'll go out on a limb and say it will grade mint state.

Thanks guys. I also think the toning is market acceptable. It's certainly not blow torched artificial looking. The blue is quite impressive and I'm excited to see what PCGS says about it.

The blue may very well be quite impressive, but if I am reading my monitor correctly (and that is not guaranteed) then that blue and auburn combination is also something that is extremely easy to make on demand and has been around for decades.

Thanks Tom. I wonder if this is a canidadate for the "sniffer"... whatever the hell that is.

I have a friend here in town who's convinced our hosts claim to be able to sniff out artificial methods it's nothing but a gimmick to bring in more coins.
  • stevebensteveben Posts: 4,641 ✭✭✭✭✭
that looks really nice and i bet it grades no problem.

PCGS never claimed the Sniffer could detect AT. It simply detects specific foreign substances that are sometimes used to enhance the appearance. Putty, Blue Ribbon, nose grease, etc.

Lance, you might as well user the "sniffer" if you are in search of NOSE GREASE!

    Beautiful, but not natural
  • FlatwoodsFlatwoods Posts: 4,248 ✭✭✭✭✭
I agree with Tom. It's pretty easy to replicate that toning.
It's also pretty easy to get that toning naturally.
I don't see how anyone could condemn that one.
That isn't your typical quick AT job.

I don't think that coin is NT, but I do think it's MA to certain people.
