Nope, just toning pattern. PCGS and CAC would not allow a coin with an "X" scratched in it to be MS66+ and Gold CAC. >>
Isn't there a tiny scratch at that location as witnessed in CoinFacts large image? No X, just a tiny scratch? And yes, it looks like a lock 67 regardless.

Just glanced at the jumbo true-view and it seems to be a scuff not a scratch
To Err Is Human.... To Collect Err's Is Just Too Much Darn Tootin Fun!
Well now that's it's posted here and we can talk about it spam or not... It's a nice coin but obviously has a scratch if not a X in the left obverse field. Which makes me ponder about how grading has changed as 25 years ago it would have body bagged. 15 years ago you'd see something like this in a 64 holder. Within nearly the last decade coins with scratches would show up in 65 to 66 holders. Now in the last couple years 66+. Then the sticker which ignores the + calls it a minimum 67. >>
What you say on grade inflation is true. I bought a Washington qtr in one of those old David Hall flips that predated PCGS, DH graded it ms66 (that must have been 20+ years ago) that coin now sits in a 67+ holder. >>
Sure, that's one example and a nice plug for DH. But odds seriously favor that if you were not a top notch grader (or your agent) and bought anything raw in the mid-1980's, you got smoked. Your "MS66" would have been lucky to be MS65 today and more like a 63/64 coin, if not cleaned, AT'd, or altered. At least that's my take on things.
I don't mind a bit that coin showing up on here anytime for any reason. A true treasure. I had pm'd wabbitt when he first posted this coin and the circumstances of his finding it. I was surprised to see it there at Stacks as well, I ran across it a while ago long before I saw this thread. Don't come on here as often as I used to. Good luck with it, not that you'll need it!!
Edited to add, I just took the bid up unsuccessfully a few notches. Yup, it's going to go for moon money...

Why not?? I would gladly pay 11K plus the juice on this coin. My 11K was unsuccessful. I can see 20K+ on it.
Sweet potato pie, mates. Nice one, Realone. And you do have a grasp on this game. I love guys who weather the storms.. and let's face it : Coins are not fun… they're great !
I put in a cut bid pre-auction. I got an a screen saying it wasn't accepted because it was under the next bid increment. Follow by an email saying it was accepted, but a red warning saying it was under the next bid. I figured it didn't go through and went along my day. I checked the auction and was bummed that it sold for what I wanted to bid. I later got an email saying I won.
It was $16.5 or $19.4 with juice

Good to know and congrats!
I thought I lost some of my best wins. Definitely an interesting mindset when you think you've lost something very special and later find out you won.
That was certainly pretty good money for that coin. As I recall, during the 2006-2008 market heat, a PCGS MS67 example of this type would have been a $20K-$25K coin. So almost getting back to those levels with a coin in a 66 holder is pretty stout imo.
Wabbit- Great coin and glad you posted it!! This has been one of the better threads in a long time around here. Knowing the details may be of help to others down the road. I am not surprised by out of the spam callers but am of the other .I am interested in the outcome but I will not be bidding. Good luck and keep us posted HERE. MOC brings back the memories. lol

Wabbit2313 I have nothing to say that has not been said. That being said I would like to congratulate you on finding the coin and making that hard decission to sell. I would also like to say congratulations to the new owner as it is an amazing coin.
Realone your coin is beautiful also, the only thing I do not like about it is the little bump spots that are raised as they always worry me on higher end coins.
Edit to add: I understand both sides of the don't post your coins that are currently listed. It is very easy for someone to just say hey my coin is for sale can you make a post for it. I think it is more truthful to do it this way as we all know the game. Having seen this post I find myself enriched by the knowledge of a beginning to end transaction of what I consider a high dollar coin and find value in this.
Realone's half dime is a wonderful example of a ultra high end 66 with real aspirations to a 67.
I feel it is worth more in the old holder with the gold CAC sticker than in a brand new 67 holder with a green sticker. It shows that the coin is stable in its holder as it has the kind of toning that could worry a buyer if the coin was in a new holder and did not know the history of the coin. But not to worry about this coin especially if it is probably stored.
It has character and I also really like the 1837 half dime! It is a doozy!
I could be seeing things but when I do not have a coin in hand and see spots such as thes that seem to be very slightly raised off the surface or could be contaminates even if stable, worry me. This is what I was refering to.

I would think you can stop worrying about this one since both John Albanese and Realone have seen it and gave it their ok, and John went so far and put his approval in writing with a gold sticker, I trust he would have noticed obvious toning spots and not stickered it if they were problematic

They are a visual anomaly the camera lens picks up from the clear acrylic NGC uses on their slab... NOT ON THE SURFACE OF THE COIN.

I was going to say this coin has nothing even remotely to what he described seeing, so what bothered him then? Weird thing to say? >>
If you take a NGC slab out in the sunlight with a 10x loupe you'll see the inside acrylic surface is not smooth.
The darker the coin the more the bumps are visible.
