Is it that you suck at grading gold, or that the TPGs are insanely accepting of large hits and wear on "MS" gold pieces? I almost always think that gold is graded about 2-3 points higher than it would be if the coin were silver or copper.

this is one of those rattler holders that has a bezel around it. i'll guess pcgs ms62...would probably upgrade to 63 by today's standards.

Some kinda trick question, right? I'll go with pcgs holder although I couldn't begin to tell ya if an old green holder or not. As far as the grade goes I gotta say 64 as I see it as such. Nice piece for sure.

The TPG's are also insanely accepting of rub on unc capped bust halves and early 19th century coins in general. If they were Morgans they'd all be AU. Would it make us all feel better if 95% of all TPG graded MS bust halves were all regraded as AU as of tomorrow? It would change the price structure any....or the relative ranking of the coins....but only the assigned grade via the grading system, which is actually quite arbitrary. You will probably find stacking friction on 99% of all uncirculated MS $20 Saints. It doesn't mean they were ever circulated. In fact, most never were.

Thanks Teddy and Broadstruck. It's my first and only doily.
I chose it as my example as it is the most common year but not so common
holder. Even though not toned I will include it in my typeset.
