1897 IHC "1" in neck

I have been a collector of IHC's for years, but never the varieties to much extent.
Are these coins much of a premium in lower grades, as this 1897 1 in neck coin?

    Like you, I've never collected the varieties.

    Dunno how much premium if any the "1 in neck" variety carries, but it's definitely a neat one.

    Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.

    Looks like 1897 1C MPD FS-401 S-1 (011.5)

    1897 1C MPD FS-401 S-1 (1 in Neck)

    If it receives a straight grade, it has a PCGS Trends Value of $50+, actual value will vary based upon demand.

    I have always considered such varieties as "interesting but nothing I'd pay a premium for." However, if I managed to find one and paid no premium to get it, I would want to try and sell it for a premium. Is there any demand? Good question.

    I didn't know the variety plus existed. I knew that it was an fs-401 but
    I knew the coin value prohibited grading and attribution, but wondered
    if the value of such a variety made it worth watching for? It seems that
    unless a coin is mid MS, no one is very interested in posts on this board
    any longer. I understand that mid ms coins are prettier but this kind of
    prohibits a beginner's desire to post here, and that is a shame. Thanks for
    your replies.

    Cool find! I actually bought a couple of these from the Penny Lady at the FUN show. Two different dates, one was higher grade in a PC holder and the other lower grade in a 2x2.

    I think you have a good candidate for eBay. Try starting it at $49.95 and see what happens.

    NGC has Variety Plus and PCGS has CoinFacts. VarietyPlus is always free, albeit not as in-depth as CoinFacts can be. I tried posting the CoinFacts hyperlink page, but it required signing in to view it.

    Although I would not pay a premium for it, I do look for varieties and keep them when I find them. Cheers, RickO

    This S-1 is a popular variety, and does command a premium, even in lower grades. Rick's Attribution Guide gives this variety a 5 star rating, meaning it's worth about a 10x premium.

    I new that he had labeled it a 5 star, but did not know that was 10 times average value.

    At the very beginning of the Attribution Guide he outlines his star system so you can get a rough idea of the value of each of the varieties.
