Newp: 1804 Draped Bust Half Cent - Guess the Grade - Grade Revealed on Page 2

msch1manmsch1man Posts: 811 ✭✭✭✭
I recently picked up this 1804 Draped Bust Half Cent for my type set. There are 13 different varieties of 1804 half cents and this is the Cohen-10 variety...identified by the crosslet 4 on the obverse and stems on the reverse. It's one of the most common varieties of the type and is a common die state as well - Manley 3.0, but as a type coin, I wasn't looking for a rare variety. I've been looking on and off for a while now for this type, but finally settled on this example.

What would you grade this coin? As always, opinions (good and bad) are welcome image.

That's a beautiful example! Very clean planchet and minimal distractions. I'd call it XF45.

I think it is higher grade than that. It's a later die state with lots of die wear but little actual wear, and full bust lines, so I would say 53 and it may actually be higher than that. Then again, very little luster is apparent and the cheek is pretty flat so what do I know?

AU50 by current slab standards, less than that by EAC standards. A very nice coin, regardless.

That's what I was thinking.....with more luster it would be a high AU coin.

I'd say that it is an AU-50. It was struck from rusted, "tired" dies which accounts from the less than smooth fields. That is not corrosion.

This is a Cohen 10, which Cohen noted is the most common (R-1) crosslet 4, stems variety. He specuates that the dies rusted because they were improperly stored, perhaps a mint closure during one of the yellow feaver epidemics plagued Philadelphia and the U.S. Mint during its early years.

If I saw it in person, and saw that it had some mint luster, I might go a few points higher.

Looks just too sweet to be an XF or even AU50. Not much wear at all and a decent amount of luster, esp. around the rev lettering. Can't grade this like a 2c piece or a Walker. Even AU55's might only have 10-20% luster.

I'd say AU55. But it's not my series. Very smooth, clean, and sharp. I don't think it's all that far from AU58 details either. But, I'm a sucker for nice old type. Send me all your XF's looking like this. image

It has good details in Liberty's hair and the leaves on the wreath. I'd say AU55.

I agree to much detail to be XF. I love the detail and would like to see it in a 53 or 55 holder. Nice pick up

I have been searching for a similar coin.
I usually try to post my first impression to "Guess the Grade" threads.
I may be off but my first thought was AU-55.
No matter the grade, it is a really nice coin with no distracting marks. Tough to find like that.

At the very least, it's an au50.

Hopefully, a little higher than that.

Thanks for all the guesses and comments.

The coin resides in a PCGS XF45 holder. I think it's exceptionally nice for an XF. I personally would grade it as an AU53. It does have some decent luster that really isn't evident in the pictures. As Bill Jones mentioned, the C-10 variety was struck from "tired" dies that had quite a bit of rust and cause some roughness in the obverse fields that I think is causing the luster to not show up in the pics. Aside from this roughness characteristic of the variety, the surfaces are a decently glossy dark brown. There really is very little wear and quite a bit of hair detail.

As mentioned I've been looking for a while...I was originally looking for a nice AU example and have found that there are very few accurately graded nice AU's out there and they usually sell for moon money when available. Seemed like the majority of AU examples were really XF's, so I was pretty pleased to find this one with AU detail (in my opinion) in an XF holder.

What do I win for this one? Maybe some of these threads should have two questions - one for the coin and one for the holder.

Did you have to pay any premium for this? Seems like a lot of coin for the assigned grade.

"Page 2" is a meaningless concept on these boards, because that all depends on a user's customization settings. I'm set for 100 messages per thread, so it's Page 1 for me.

Unless the surfaces of that coin are as dull as a Matte Proof, I'd say that the coin is under graded.
