Dip it or not? the big question...

it is simple, should this coin be dipped?
It is nearly black and not attractive at all to look at.
I am personally not a "dipper" or c"cleaner". but perhaps there would ? - should/ or are ? allowable ot tolerated exceptions?
what is your opinion and / or perhaps experience?

You might want to try swabbing the coin with acetone using a Q-tip. Some of the dirt may come off then. I am not in favoring of dipping. This coin would probably grade at VF+. The details would not be improved if dipped. Thank you for showing the coin. John

I don't believe that dipping would help this coin; i think it might be beyond that point already. You would run the risk of some of the thick black patina coming off and other parts not...

I agree with ShadyDave; dipping won't help it. If anything, it could look worse. Dark toning is sometimes etched into the coin, and dipping it might make it appear stained.

I should have indicated before that the coin is NOT dirty at all
it is just black ( patina or oxydation)???
wondering what caused this "black" condition?

Hmmm, best seen in hand. I confess to VERY LIGHTLY dipping a similar such piece, and don't have the coin but it looks good. You would certainly not want a bright white piece of silver with the marks displayed.

I wouldn't dip it. It looks good as is. The more a coin has circulated and the thicker the toning, the less likely dipping will accomplish much in terms of eye appeal.

(patina or oxidation?) definition is in the eye of the beholder. Visit the liteside and present the question to RICKO, he'll say tarnish!

which TPG would grade that as you suggested?
Personally I do not think that any of the top 2 in the US would grade it.. it would be: .****... details IMO.
Can grader ICCS might go for VF, for sure F15.

I don't think so... the picture leads me to believe it is not possible for the coin to get a straight grade

I don't think a dip would be helpful for this coin.

BTW, I love this portrait of Victoria. I like that coin just the way it is.
