Baltimore and Pluto! Who's going?

I am very excited to be going to the Summer Whitman show next week. It coincides with the Pluto flyby on the 14th. Since the New Horizons mission is being run at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, we will be pretty close to the action.

Yeah, it hurts to look at that image. Eyes want to focus ... but can't.

I love astronomy. Took it in college, instead of chemistry. Awesome science. First day of class, the professor said "if you are here for astrology and zodiac signs now is the time to leave" and about fifty people (it was a mid-size lecture class) promptly left.

Hope I live long enough to see space. Affordable commercial flights are becoming more of a reality every year.

we may want to keep searching, from my understanding, an excellent image was en route.

although, i'd have to see previous images to judge if this is the best image thus far.

perhaps it wont be made public?

if that is the best, i'd be disappointed a bit. if we can make "accurate" judgements about crap floating around out there oodles of light years away, it cant

be a big deal to get pro images from some little spherical rock 3-5 billion miles out? it has a pretty eccentric orbit so the distance changes quite a bit or

so "they" say.

im prob not going to the show but it closer to me than long beach for sure, maybe even fun.

I believe Uranus is now the end of the line. . . .

It's Astronomers. "Astrologists" are the zodiac/horoscope folks

And the "demotion" was simply a labeling issue of where to "draw the line" between planet and planetoid/dwarf planet.

Is it true that they sent a probe to investigate the rings around Uranus?

and Neptune is now the "official" last planet in our solar system. I remember being at UCLA when they had a "live" feed with images of blue Neptune from the then-passing space probe.

Awesome! My daughter shares a middle name with one of Neptune's moons. Love these new pics of Pluto and Charon, I remember being in grade school when the latter was discovered.

Here's a pic of the Florida State Quarter that is on the New Horizons spacecraft that is now very close to Pluto. There's also a Maryland State Quarter on board. Maryland is where the spacecraft was build and Florida is where it launched.

And here's an article about the state quarters on the spacecraft, where they came from, how they actually serve a purpose on the craft and why they needed two of them... very interesting!!!

They are getting close enough to distinguish geological features.

The astronomers had no dithering. Simply a calibration issue. . . .

This might well be explained by the Mayan arithmetic error discovery and its mystery as revealed by Dr. Sheldon Cooper. Available on Hulu, and let's not talk of that again. . .

Three billion miles from Earth and just two and a half million miles from Pluto, NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft has taken its best image of four dark spots that continue to captivate.

The spots appear on the side of Pluto that always faces its largest moon, Charon—the face that will be invisible to New Horizons when the spacecraft makes its close flyby the morning of July 14. New Horizons principal investigator Alan Stern of the Southwest Research Institute, Boulder, Colorado, describes this image as “the last, best look that anyone will have of Pluto’s far side for decades to come.”

Very cool about the Pluto flyby! And I'm also looking foward to going to the Baltimore show and even though I will take every safety precaution as always, I am confident all will be well.

Only 1 million miles to go.

BTW, Baltimore is 2,315 miles from Tucson. The New Horizons is traveling at 30,800 miles per hour, so it could take me to Baltimore in 4.5 minutes.

Due to a variety of technical factors, the VAST MAJORITY of high quality information will NOT arrive here on July 14 (the time of closest encounter), but will rather arrive over the following 16 months. Basically think of it like a slow internet connection. I'm sure however that there'll be at least a few fun "thumbnails" that are released to the public on the 14th and 15th.

They say that the spacecraft will devote all its time to making observations on the 14th and then start sending images back on the 15th. I'll be flying to Baltimore then and don't feel that I'll be missing anything while in the air.

Baltimore was very well attended. Seemed like a spring or fall show. For those who skipped and went to the beach, you missed a good one.
