Why send this to PWCC?

Why would someone do this? Just doesn't make sense to me. I bought this card a few months ago for approximately $425 from PWCC, then I re-sell it for the same amount on May 7th, only to see the same card show-up back at PWCC for auction. Buyer knew I purchased it from PWCC. Just seems like a huge gamble to take buying a low grade card at a premium price and then immediately send it to PWCC (which makes it seem to be the reason for the purchase).

I'll speculate on two possible reasons:

1. Something came up and the buyer needed the money.
2. The buyer decided he didn't like the card as much as he thought he would once the card was in hand. (I've had this happen to me many times.)

3. With the high prices PWCC has been getting, your buyer thought he could flip it quickly for some money.

He was probably banking on it getting one of those "this card is unreal" stickers PWCC now gives out

Would have been happy to accept a refund. I hope he is able to clear what he paid...and rooting on him coming out ahead.

good looking 4 in my opinion. has everything going for it:

decent centering
minimal chipping
first run skate lines on back
nicely centered red oil drip on the front
and appears to be crease free

edit: guessing it clears $535.

Top edge is crimped/folded over. Really difficult to see in the PWCC scans. Other than that, and a few wrinkles, it's really a beauty.

The card presents well in the scan. My guess is the seller will turn a quick profit. The buyer will not be so happy once it's in hand and will turn around and re-sell in a few months.

I put two of my three low grade Gretzky cards on eBay with high BIN/OBOs to see what offers come in. Wasn't necessarily looking to move the Gretzky, but the buyer seemed eager to want it, so I told him he could have it for what I paid for it.

Of the three, the PSA 4 had a tilt that, at first, didn't bother me, but after awhile sort of did, which made it easier for me to part with. I think the PSA 3 that I have presents itself much better than this 4.

Here is the write-up when I bought it on February 17th:

"Shows like a NRMT example. Nicely centered with sharp corners. A few faint back wrinkles account for the low technical grade."

Here is the zoomed-in scan from the February auction to accompany the description:

And here is the current write-up:

"High end '4' with near perfect centering, well formed corners and clean surfaces. A couple of faint roller marks and wrinkles on the reverse prevent a higher technical grade."

So you buy the card, sell it for what you paid and therefore realize a loss after fee's, and question why someone would buy a card and sell for a potential loss?

Guy probably found a nicer one and is moving this one cause he needs the cash.

Actually, sold it for a tad bit higher to break even on fees. And only sold it because the guy seemed to really want this card. I have more than one, so no need to hold onto something I have multiples of if someone else has strong interest in it. As said, would have happily accepted a refund for any reason.

Based on the short time between the sale and the consignment deadline for this month's PWCC auction, I am nearly sure it was a planned flip. They probably didn't buy it and decide that they actually wanted a different, nicer copy in a week or two. They also probably didn't have buyer's remorse because, as Patrick said, he would take a return. It's not unreasonable for them to think this card could go for big money at PWCC, given their results lately and the good eye appeal of the card relative to its grade.
