Here are the winners in the PCGS grading contest at the Long Beach coin show.

Young Numismatists (winner gets MS65 Morgan)
Ron Sonnes (6 out of 10)
runner-up Ozzy Poncharvis (5 out of 10)

Collector Division (winners get $1000 each)
a tie at 9 out of 10 correct
Jim Stofle
Anthony Esplin

Dealer Division (winners get $1000 each)
11 out of 20
Marc Crane
Kyle Knapp

They were all straight grades, no pluses, and no counterfeits or no-grades. There was one tricky coin, a Proof 55 Seated quarter, which very few people called proof. Fun contest, we'll do it again.

Congrats! 9/10 is pretty darn good - better than the dealers...or is there a typo?

Did the incorrect guesses tend to be high or low?

Cool ... thanks for sharing the results. It would be interesting to know how the wrong guesses were wrong.

Given time there will be plenty of people guessing the grades in this thread without seeing the coins

Nine out of ten? And two of 'em? Holy chit. Time to start a grading company.

OK, that makes more sense, I guess

That might have been the one coin I got dead on lol

Can we get a list of the coins and their grades and find out our individual scores?

Michael, did you compete? Or are ex-winners not allowed?

It would be fun to see True Views of all the coins.

Nah, I didn't try it this time... figured I'd give the others a chance image

Actually, was just busy during the show and the $50 they charged to compete this time wasn't too exciting. It looked like a lot of people had fun with it though.

This is cool! Good thing the dealers squeaked out a win over the collectors. It just might ward off a 300 reply thread somewhere else.

    I agree with Justacommeman, MS63.

Congrats to the winners and kudos to the host for another cool contest with real cool prizes.

Wait. . . 9 of 20 (45%) correct on the Collector level and 11 of 20 (55%) correct on the Dealer level.

Are these the mean average from past contests ? image

Hooray for those who are able. It's a tough thing to do… Grading , while subjective, has it's nuances where the "few" remain atop the game. And I typically won't argue what is "in" the case here, or ATS. Mostly because I see how hard it is every day with raw coins that people think are "MS" but they're XF and dipped bright and shiny. Or worse, they're doctored and slip past my eyes. That can cost a guy. So be careful when BUYING the grades from any sources. LOOK at the coins in the holders.

And kudos to all who partake seriously , in this part of the hobby. It's the KEY to the whole process.

    OK:

    MS63 XF40 AU53 MS65 XF45

    VF25 MS60 PF55 MS67 VF20

    MS60 PF64 AU58 F15 MS66

    G6 MS65 XF45 MS62 AU53

I think I nailed it! Trust me. I learned to grade on-line. I don't need to see no coins in hand.

HRH, My thanks for this grading venue as it is an educational experience for all. The results are much lower than I expected. But if you compared total grade points to PCGS grade points perhaps the results might have been closer. Missing a grade by one point is not an indication that you cannot grade, just that you cannot grade to PCGS Standard. And sometimes collectors overgrade and sometimes they undergrade. I find that collectors rarely grade anymore. They would rather rely on your expert grading service.

When I won at Long Beach a couple years ago, I think I had 10 out of 20... the contest after that I think the winner got 6 out of 20.

I knew that quarter was proof, dang it! I was going back and forth between MS and PR for a good 5 minutes. I think I ultimately settled on MS since the surfaces were not reflective, but when I first picked it up I thought proof.

Remind me to go with my gut next time!

certainly the field was limited but I find it interesting that the best a non-grader could do is average 50%.
