"You Suck!" award - history lesson

Who started the "You Suck!" award and who was the first recipient of this (seemingly) prestigious accolade?

Having only been around here a few years I can't comment on the history of this forum, however, it is not unique to this forum or the coin world. I would say I've heard many non-coin references of this nature going back at least 10 years.

Are we sure it was Cameron Keifer?
  • Seems it was thrown around quite a bit in every day exchanges.

Madmarty and Russ during some of their exchanges, I think.

As a member of the YS Hall of Fame, I agree. Marty used to have the members posted on his website, but I think it bit the dust.

Here is the earliest reference to YOU SUCK that I can find.

    That's a cool thread.
    I like this exchange...

<< Marty suggests a profit of 100x the cost minimum. >>

That's way too stiff a requirement. Marty's being an elitist snob and trying to keep people out of the club. image

Note: You cannot 'ask' for a "You Suck" it has to be spontaneously nominated by a fellow board member.

That particular thread is using the "You Suck" statement in a totally different way than the "You Suck" was intended.

"You Suck" was intended as a "sarcastic bravo" for when a collector cherry-picked a coin that had a value of much greater than the initial purchase price. For example, a 1961 sealed proof set purchased for $50 that yielded a 61 DDR Franklin in Deep Cameo, would earn a "You Suck"! A 1961 Franklin DDR purchased for a bit under book value, would not.

In other words, the profit margins had to be up into the 500-1000 times purchase price to get an official "You Suck".

The admonition in the Coin World most certainly started on the PCGS Forums. This isn't to say that folks weren't using "You Suck" for other purposes but for the purpose of high praise, it started here.

Madmarty even started a "You Suck Hall of Fame" web page but the term got misused so often, I'm sure he just gave it up.

    You Suck Hall of Fame

As you can see, the first entry on the page refers to a 62-P Franklin which PCGS graded at MS66FBL. I think Marty paid $7 for the coin so, it definitely sucked.
Here's the thread. Graded at MS66FBL!

Since Marty authored the page and was and an active "suckee", I can only assume that the MadMarty/Russ "Deep Cameo/FBL Half Dollar Wars" of the past was a solid basis for the continuance of the admonition/award.

It was around even before I was. Probably goes back to the old boards, like the Liteside/Darkside terminology.

Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.

being that many of these awards were derived from an ebay purchase, id say that anything worth even twice what one pays is deserving of a YS award, as there is so little to find on ebay these days
regardless of how many posts I have, I don't consider myself an "expert" at anything

It was definitely around on the old board... and was a MadMarty/Russ derivation... intended for a cherrypick that derived significant profit over purchase price.....I was on the old board and can attest to this...Cheers, RickO

I remember bushmaster8 getting two "YS's" before his bamming.

    1 for a 1953-S MS65FBL Franklin , and 1 for a 1962-D 25¢ MS67 when it was only a pop 2.

Did anybody else get double suckered?
