People change .. world has changed ...economy has changed ... this forum has changed.... what else is new
To me it sounds like revisionist history. The good old days weren't that good on the forum. The flame wars, the open forum with its political sewer talk are some of the worst of the Internet in terms of information vs. temper.
Bottom line is that the coin hobby is and always has been dominated by grumps. This forum skews towards higher income, higher net worth grumps (PCGS certified collectors coins tend to cost many multiples of raw coins). Combine a grumpy attitude towards life and add the big ego that tends to come with having a bit of money, and you get what you get. It isn't going to change. I don't think it has changed, if anything it is a bit better than it used to be.
The worst might be the whiner crowd. Waah, waah, waah, why aren't things better, why can't dealers (or grading services) work for near free, why can't things be different? Oops, that probably now includes me

This, pretty much...except the part about the net worth of the posters, which has little to no bearing on it. I think that time tends to tint one's glasses a bit more rosy. I lurked here a lot before officially joining, and back in the "good old days", there were epic flame wars and trollfests galore. I think now that since it doesn't happen quite as often-thanks in large measure to establishment/enforcement of forum rules-the times when such things do happen simply tend to stand out a bit more IMO.

The "assumption" here is that all forum ids are "Grown Men and Women". (i.e. Adults)
The reality is that nothing could be further from the truth as NOBODY knows anybody that posts other than through Coin Show contact or 1 on 1 dealings.
The "Age of the Internet" is also "The Age of Anonymity" and that anonymity empowers people to say and do things which they would otherwise NOT do. If an account says something which is clearly out of line, then the account gets bammed. BUT, bammed accounts often show up under some other name and there is absolutely nothing which can be done about that because "Anonymity" is the name of the game.
People can and often do LIE to cover who they really are. This lying often revolves around the kind of person that the liar would "like" to be but cannot manage to actually be.
Once people know and understand this, then they can pick and choose which threads they wish to participate in and "which" forum accounts they wish to respond to.
It's really quite simple.
I know of another forum where the "youth" of the posters, whether it's young in numismatic knowledge or physically young, is quite obvious. That forum suffers from the exact same scenarios as what has been described. Anonymity.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

this wasn't always just a coin forum, back when I joined the whole forum was a horror show of coin, political, name calling, ETC
then many got banned and the forum changed into what it is now a coin forum
plus we had some good members who died so the forum reflected those losses
in all the forum has changed but those changes were brought on by issues and situations this forum faced
