You know I happy joined the forum years back with a zeast for learning about coins and opinions of others but in the last few months {world and US} I've seen more personal attacks and fights {outside harsh comments} and not to me. I'm just curious what's causing adults to act like this I really don't understand why grown men and women would say things that to each other for little to no reason. I've always found the forums to be beneficial to help me learn about my coins and the likes and digs of others. Maybe someone else can fill in the blanks??

I approach life with the basic understanding that people suck. That way I am not disappointed when I find out that most of the people I meet suck, and get a pleasant surprise when 10% of them don't suck.

Despite all that you say here, I have seen worse forums than this one - go to any Sports forum, especially baseball. An argument over who deserves to be in the Baseball Hall of Fame can become a pitched battle.
Successful BST deals with mustangt and jesbroken. Now EVERYTHING is for sale.
1. On the internet people are emboldened because you can say what you want without fear of being punched in the nose.
2. Politics, or more specifically a leadership failure (both major parties) make everyone frustrated, that boils over into our daily activities.
3. Posting things off topic. This just invites more off topic comments.
(I was even gonna say a 51% majority, but let's not push it. That would be a jinx.)
Got an overly generous tip from one of my hotel guests last night that was 4x what he should have offered for the simple errand I ran. I even said it was unnecessary but he insisted.
Then on my way home, some young dude in a hopped up sedan with those oversized ghetto rims cut me off in traffic and almost caused an accident.
I guess it all balances out on some cosmic scale somewhere.

The forum was a lot happier place in 2006 or so when virtually all coins were increasing rapidly in value.
Most coins are holding steady or losing value right now, with gold dropping.
Call it seasonal mood disorder?
10 years ago Social Media was something for young people and artists, MySpace was the reigning king, and 95% of society was deathly afraid (and privacy was key).
Today we have Facebook, Twitter, and a myriad of ways for our increasingly narcissistic society to elevate their perceived self-importance, like medicine for a sick person.
I'm in the Social Media software business and built a technology platform that tracks people's behavior using Social Data, so I've been seeing this trend for quite some time now.
It is what it is, by the way, that saying is a byproduct of the last 10 years, 10 years ago this saying didn't exist...that's my point.
Society has changed! Sorry, the forum just now mimics what's going on in the world....

But seriously, I like the comment about 2006. More of a bull market then, and also more interesting for Moderns collectors than things are now. When there's not as much interesting to talk about, maybe conversations tend to degrade.
Anyway, I still enjoy checking in here.

Pretty much what I was thinking. Also, many collectors have sold and/or moved on. The Registry Forum belongs to the crickets now. It used to be a hopping place. The US Forum appears to be visited more by dealers/investors and not as many collectors, as there used to. A multitude of social media sites has also attracted some.
Something needs to spark hobby interest to attract new collectors. That will bring more to the Forums.
Until then, fewer forum participants leads to a little boredom. Which leads to off topic posts.

Moderation is certainly a double-edged sword and has had a dampening effect on the forum, including the closing of the Open Forum. The US Mint release fiascos while, in the long run, only a blip on the radar, energized the collecting base. The US Mint has found a way to monetize the most from its offerings while keeping the flippers at bay.
The forum, like the hobby more generally, could use a shot in the arm.

If a picture wasn't going very well I'd put a puppy dog in it, always a mongrel, you know, never one of the full bred puppies. And then I'd put a bandage on its foot... I liked it when I did it, but now I'm sick of it.

I think we are fairly civil here compared to other forums and to life in general. Could you link a few examples of what you are talking about? Maybe I'm not reading the same threads that you are.

Here is the reason why...............
I realize I am drifting from the OP -- so, I would just say, "Sure, there are some posters here that remind me of every type of kid I have in my sophomore English classes!" I can assign a soph English name to each type of guy/gal here. Some contribute, some really are valuable, some need attention for good OR bad effort, and some just exist to detract from the progress of others. I try to spend time with all, but enjoy the time with my best students a bit more. They learn, and they also teach me a bit as well.
That is my analogy for the day . . .

I too have seen some pretty good powder kegs lately, and often times over something trivial. I am sometimes tempted to offer resolution, but know that sometime the old saying "the less said the better" is the best solution.

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009.
