Circle of Trust on BST Board

MICHAELDIXONMICHAELDIXON Posts: 6,604 ✭✭✭✭✭
Within the last week, I have had successful transactions with: cucamongacoin, cohodk, dpoole and Jinx86. Over the years, I have had many successful purchases from the BST board with no problems. If you have had recent positive experiences, please list the person's name here. It might help somebody out.

I've done literally many dozens of BST purchases and all have been smooth transactions without any drama. I make it a rule to buy from active participants here that I've gotten to know fairly well. Common sense goes a long way here.

Me too. My transactions number in the 100's. Never had a problem with active participants.

Gerard, piecesofme, Type2, AUandAG, lordmarcovan are a couple of recent positive transactions and some of those I've done multiple transactions with.

I hope I have earned a good name on the other side of the equation.

I've done dozens, and dozens of successful transactions on the BST. It's a valuable tool for my selling/buying.

However, if you have not done a transaction with someone, please ask for references (recent if possible). No one
    should get offended by this.

This seems the logical course of action to me. Were I to buy from the BST, there are many here who, though we've undoubtedly verbally jousted back and forth at times on these boards, are obviously people of good character with whom I would have no qualms doing a transaction.

    Quite true.
I purchased from him, a few times, but, thankfully, not at the time things went downhill.
The due diligence is huge and, to me, it also wraps in with board participation (and the type of participation).

There is also no coin, no deal, that is so necessary to me that I would forgo due diligence....but, for some, the $$$ of the deal blinds them (thinking of some bullion issues over the past).

People may complain about paypal, but at least, if used correctly, there is some protection (for both parties) there. I can, and will, do non-paypal fee transactions, but I am especially wary of them....particularly when the transaction value exceeds my own comfort level (different for everyone, I am sure).

I don't do a ton of BST transaction, but when I have, I have, as I mentioned, looked at the other end, made my own personal judgment call, and then proceeded. I have done transaction with new board members but have asked for the item to be sent to me first. I have given out various references to help them make the decision if that was a right thing for them to do (send to me first, then send the money to them).

There are ways to do things....just do the due diligence and be precise, without being a PITA, imho.

Btw....I also do believe that it helps to deal with some folks when they are known by others on the board, in person. Not foolproof, but one way to get more character references than just behind a keyboard. For instance, I have met SeattleSlammer (who posted above me) and I would have NO qualms in dealing with him on anything nor in recommending him. Same for RickO, Lakesamman, and Swampboy. Met them all and I honestly feel they have high integrity.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I don't really keep track (I could find it with a little research), but I've done 15, maybe 20 deals via the BST. All have gone perfectly.
  • I want to comment that even with less than a dozen or so transactions on BST I check it regularly, and even though there's no feedback component to it except threads like this - which would create other problems - I found myself in a situation when I had a couple of little things on ebay and my computer went bad and it may have seemed that I disappeared, but I was here unable to respond. With some help from friends and eventually a new computer, I was able to salvage all. Another time I had kidney stones and was out of action for a while -disappeared to all online. Just saying.

I have done BST business with probably 200+ members in the last 13+ years and can't say I've ever been badly burned or blatantly ripped off. I tend to trust BST more than anywhere else.

Only once did I have a scare when a YN bought a gold coin from me, decided he had other uses for the money, and asked to return it. Trustingly, I refunded his money via PayPal before the coin came back. Then it didn't. Turns out he'd gone off to college without sending it back, which his Mom later did, if memory serves. So that one worked out in the end.

I would say that if one uses just the minimum amount of common sense and caution, BST is as good or better than any other venue out there. It is the primary benefit of these forums, perhaps, as if all the collected wisdom and camaraderie weren't already enough.

I suppose I can chime in here. I've got a hundreds of buys & sells on the BST without ever having a problem.
I love the buy/sell aspect of this collecting hobby, and while I do feel terrible for those few who have had problems, I hope the negative publicity does not overshadow what a good thing we all have going here.

I've made some genuine friends on these boards and often that has begun with the buy sell trade pages.

The genius of BST is you can buy /sell at better than dealer pries with some fresh coins thrown in the mix

The danger of BST is it becomes a soft target for those fringe lurkers / crooks that can take advantage of the trusting nature of some forum members

I have drifted back to this thread a couple of times in the last 24 hours, and finally it made me think . . . "How many BST transactions have I had?" It truly hasn't seemed like that many, but then I went through all my PMs. With some multiple purchases over the years . . . . the number was staggering . . . . 55 different Forum members!!!!

Recent? Many. Who? It reads like a 'Who's who' of numismatics or at least our Forum. I hesitate to try to do a list as I would inevitably miss someone, but spending an hour or so looking back over my BST connections -- much of my Doily Set has been a result of either outright purchases or a 'heads-up' from a Forum member.

I thought about listing them in the sigline, but Rule #9 states we can only have one line in the sigline -- so I can't do that, I guess.

The BST has been a super resource. Sure . . . due diligence, but the very rare transaction that goes south is outnumbered 1000 to 1 by the super opportunities there.

    Thanks to all . . . . .

I have not BST'd lately, but have never had a problem. My sig line tells only part of the story --- there are many more who I apologize for not keeping my list up! I think my most recent was extraleaf where I got my first extra leaf state quarter (cool!). Interesting to see the same folks on many of these lists.
