My April 2015 PCGS Members Show Las Vegas report

I had some airlines miles that were close to expiring so I though why not do a quick, cheap Vegas trip to check it out along with attending the PCGS show at the Palazzo. The last PCGS members only show I attended was in May 2010, so figured I was way overdue for another shot. I stayed at the Linq, which was close enough by for walking distance. The Linq is where the old Imperial Palace was, and it was a nice upgrade. Can't complain about a nice room right on the Strip for < $100 for 2 nights. No $@#%% resort fee either! The trip was short, but I had a blast, even though I mostly contributed to the Vegas economy instead of took from it.
The show itself was way quieter than my last show. Legend and Heritage had tables there, but nothing to look at or preview. A few other tables were the same way too, guess they were either there for grading or something else. But it was the people who were at the tables with coins that made a difference, and made it a fun show for me. This show does let (or encourage) you slow down and give you time to socialize with other dealers and collectors. I got to spend quite a bit of time at Angel Dee's table to short the breeze with Andy and his wife Alynne. Both are great people to talk to, and I got to see the greatest set of toned war nickels ever, bar none. Nothing else I've seen before even comes close to what Alynne has put together. I think my eyes still have colored specks from looking at them! I also visited John and Sandy Gulde, both super nice people that had some nice coins at their table. Also got to spend some time with John Dannreuther, one of the PCGS cofounders and coin geek/researcher deluxe. I enjoyed hearing his stories about mint processes and him getting to look at the archive documents from the Mint from way back when. The most fun part for me was hearing his 'bombshell' research about the 1914/3 Buffalo nickel. Other tables I visited were the KMJ Group, which was fun. A young man (good to see young blood) named Michael Lerchitvikal had some boxes of coins which in included a stunning toned 1942 PCGS MS-67+ Walker that he made. Also visited with NFC and Stack's, who had some nice coins to look thru. NFC had a beautifully toned 1879-O Morgan at their table and Stacks ended up being the source of my lone purchase, pictured below.
I also ran into Lance (lkeigwin) on Friday, so we spent some time comparing virtual Capped Bust halves on our phones. One of the forum good guys for sure!
Of course, the food spread in fantastic at this show, there is no reason to starve whatsoever. Hopefully it will be less than 5 years until my next members show!
Here is my purchase from the show. I had several coins that did pull at me, bust halves at John and Sandy Gulde's table, buffalos at Angel Dees, Morgans at NFC and an 1896 PCGS MS-66+ Morgan at Stacks. I settled for one of the smallest coins there, an 1849 gold $1 graded PCGS MS-61. I didn't have this date, plus that being the year of the CA gold rush start had some resonance with me.

It has also been my pleasure to do a few deals with John Gulde. Apparently gulde means gold in Afrikaans - their career was chosen for them! Nice guys.
The only PCGS Vegas show I've been able to hit was I think the second one, for just a few minutes at closing time. Half of the dealers were gone and so was the food. One of these days I'll be back.

i was there. i wish more coins were on display, but it was nice to talk with the people there.
i submitted a few pandas for grading. there is one i am hoping is a 70. we'll see.
i did see some of the coins from the new orleans collection at the heritage table. they are very nice!
i heard about the toned nickels, but did not see them, unfortunately.
