Regrade or Reconsideration

If you have PCGS coins you think could be in higher grade holders which grading tier would you resubmit:

Regrade - the coins are unslabbed and sent through the process raw (no risk of downgrade)? OR

Reconsideration - the coins are viewed in their current holders and possibly could improve by a "+" or full grade or ??. You are charged an additional 1% of PCGS value for any "winners."?

For me, the jury is still out as I've had successes and disappointments using both tiers.

Sometimes, you've got to wonder what they're thinking down at Newport Beach!

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but if you go the re-grade route the all bets are off on the current grade that is on the holder. It could grade up, down, or stay the same.

Coins sent to PCGS through the Regrade tier (they unslab the coins b-4 the grading process) are guaranteed NOT to downgrade.

I've used regrade very time, never reconsideration

If you care OGH or early holder and you don't want new holders unless it is upgraded, then re-consideration; otherwise, re-grade. You need to know if you re-grade, you won't keep old holders even there is no grade change.

    Not true.

What IS true is that regrades ARE unslabbed and sent through. They remain the same grade, or higher, MOST of the time. There IS a chance (if the coin turned, or something was noticed that was missed before) that the coin DOES downgrade, at which point PCGS will contact the owner/submitter and negotiate a settlement (ie.....coin bodybags for some reason, owner gets paid for the coin and PCGS may keep it.....or, coin downgrades and PCGS pays the difference between grades).

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

    Bochiman, thanks for correcting me.

Bottomline - there is no net loss to submitter in the very small chance of a downgrade or bodybag happening.

Regarding my thread, I'm referring to perceived premium quality coins that trained eyes have ascertained as potential upgrades. Put another way, if the coin was nice but had a problem my eyes
would catch it and not resubmit.

I only use Regrade, never Reconsideration.

Doesn't it seem awfully likely there is an impulse to defend the current grade under reconsideration, which may make it more difficult for consideration of anything other than the current grade? It is all very subjective.

I think a great example of subjectivity comes with regard to scratches. A scratch is apparently acceptable if it is consistent with the grade. Then if the scratch is slightly worse, then wouldn't that be consistent with a slightly lower grade, in which case wouldn't it have been better to grade at a a lower grade rather than body bag it?

Reconsideration makes sense for old holders where there is an incentive to retain the coin in it's current holder. I would choose regrade in every instance where this was not a consideration to allow the graders to see the coin in it's raw state allowing for a better chance for an upgrade.

I wonder if you're more likely to get a plus grade or designation by going the reconsideration route. The grader will know what you the owner has to start with, and what goals you might have in mind.

Maybe I should rephrase the question to: Regrade, Reconsideration, or crack-out and Resubmit Raw?

It's all on the game you are playing. If you have a coin that you know will upgrade crack it but if it's a maybe don't or we will see you on the board saying how you got the banana. You need some big egg's to crack out a $10K coin that if it drops 1 point will be a $2K coin but a lot do it no pain no gain. image

But with reconsideration you might get a 1/2 point uptick, or on copper an RB to RD. But probably no home run as if the coin was very undergraded.

I'm surprised by the confusion here. It's really very simple.

If you love the holder but would give it up for a higher grade, and don't mind the premium fee, then use reconsideration.

If you just want another opinion on the grade and are okay with a new holder however it turns out then use regrade.

Regrades will not downgrade or there'll be a payout.

Does the coin receive a new cert# whether or not the grade changes if sent in as a regrade?

Yes for a regrade, but not for a reconsideration...cert # stays the same.

I have had good luck using the regrade service.

I prefer reconsideration. I have used Regrade once, and it was a success.

Who has heard of the MS69 Indian Head Cent story? My biggest fear is that if I send coins in for Regrade and the graders decide it is upgradable, they could damage the coin.

I would rather my coins stay in the same holder, undamaged, unless they upgrade.

I realize it lowers my chances, but it’s the safer option in my opinion.

That's what I was thinking just received 8 coins back from regrade, no upgrades but all new certs with sequential numbers. Need to do some research tonight and I guess update my Registry sets, have not looked there yet.
