Fake 1916 SLQ

Seller actually has two of them:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1916-STANDING-LIBERTY-QUARTER-25c-Key-Date-Very-Rare-Coin-/121617184894

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1916-STANDING-LIBERTY-QUARTER-25c-Key-Date-Very-Rare-Coin-/121617196300

Cast counterfeit, Chinese fake, or some other method to swindle you I'm not really sure. But the rivets on that shield, the head, the gown, the drapery, all point to 1917.

Seller has enough other coins - even some certified - that s/he should know.

But... it is being liquidated from an estate.

They sure do look the Chinese look to my eyes. Sent a note to seller advising that he get them authenticated.

Those were pretty good fakes except for the "6" in the date.

Why would anyone buy an uncertified coin priced at $4,000+ on eBay. image
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

You're not even supposed to be able to list a coin for $4500.00 that is uncertified!

This listing was ended by the seller because the item is no longer available.

In the old days there were tons of them sold, 90% of the by scammers, and the nice people on eBay bid on them like crazy.

I think there are a number of things wrong other than the date. That shield is struck way too well for a 1916.

If I recall correctly, anything fixed price over $2500 must be certified. I don't know about starting over $2500 for auction listings.

    any way shape or form.

"The starting, reserve, or Buy It Now price for the coin is less than $2,500"

a poor quality fake here. proper lighting would make it much more apparent.

agreed on the lighting. All of a sudden, the good lighting that he used for his other coins was no longer available. The guy had to know he was selling fakes and photographed them accordingly
