Questions about a 1903 Morgan

Hello everyone. I recently got this coin from a friend. At first glance i thought it was cleaned but after looking at it closer i noticed mirror like fields underneath all the crud on the obverse. It appears to be either proof or proof-like but I am no expert. The mirror like fields on the reverse seem to be more prominent than the obverse. Please could someone help me out on this coin? i was wondering grade too. I took the best pictures i could, i know they're not the best. Thank you for your time and consideration.

P.S. I am not sure how to post the pictures on this site so here is my original post on a different site. Again thank you.

- Peter

If it's a proof, the denticles wll be a giveaway.

Not a proof. Look for the "mesa" or "plateau" effect on the lettering and date. Not there. Not proof rims either. No squareness at the bottom of each raised detail. Can a VAM collector say whether of not there is some evidence available if a discrete set of dies for proof Morgans was used later for production strikes? Reverse is not a C-4 (I think). We will hear more of this later today.

    Likely polished.

Not only are the tops of the "mesas" sharply flat, but the juncture of the perpendicular edge of each device and the flatness of the fields is also very sharp, Lots different angles of refraction and diffusion of light.

DMPL 03's have a very different look. Compare on HA archives.

I can't make head nor tails about a grade from the images but I can see it is not a proof.

So then...looking at the denticles... Is this a proof???.... LINKY

Anyone here who hasn't looked at the HA archive photos is wasting a lot of time. Three comparisons (MS DMPL (or PL) vs. low grade, even circ, proofs) and you'll be grooved in for life.

I would think PCGS would have recognized it a proof if it was one and that one looks nothing like a proof to me.

It's more than denticles, however that coin might indeed be an impaired proof.
  • Am I seeing things wrong or is the bottom smaller reverse image a different coin as it looks like a 78 first die reverse looking at the feather detail by the right wing facing us left wing of eagle at the base of the wing and the body?
