Well, just Love coins, period.
Looking for Top Pop Mercury Dime Varieties & High Grade Mercury Dime Toners.
The lighting is a little off for me so I'm erring on a side of caution.

58 nice.
AU 53 was my first thought.
And, as others have said, pretty tough in those AU grades!
Nice addition to the album!

BTW, I did crack this out already.

Seems to have a little extra wear than I like to see for a AU grade.

Ah, missed this. Probably AU-50 then.
Why did you crack it out? Are you assembling a raw set?

Yes, upgrading the VF currently in my album to better match the other coins without springing for (and risking) too nice an example of this date.

there are a lot of ugly examples of the date/mm out there.. in every grade

NGC AU55
I grade it 54; this coin bears no evidence of being warshed off

Nice strike, I thought 55.
Your cracking skills are outstanding! Mine come apart in many pieces.
Care to share your technique?

I use a bench vice. Wrap the slab in a soft cloth like an old T shirt, place in vice jaws the "short" way, squeeze until it "pops"
Loosen, turn slab 90 degrees so it's in the "long" way, squeeze again until it pops, may need to go back and forth again.
This method works best with NGC and old small ANACS slabs, often the seams pop cleanly and slab opens like book.
For PCGS, I use large parallel cutters at 9 and 3 o'clock to the coin, and slab cracks straight across.

The coin sure looked better in the picture.... still a nice piece... Cheers, RickO
I was also thinking 53 or 55 but when you show the slab grade and I go back to look, then I agree with the assigned grade.
Why? Not sure, but yours is a very nice example for the grade. I too use the vise for cracking out all except the SEGS slabs which are the ones I end up cutting open.
You crack old Anacs hotel-soap slabs
If I had a bench vice I'd probably use it too but the hammer and towel version works just as well for me. Clean breaks all around 90% of the time
Looked AU53 to me. Great coin in a 45 holder! Good luck with whatever you decide to do with it.
This thread is so old and the OP resurrected it. What ever happened with the regrade after you cracked it?
pretty coin i thought 55 +
It's still raw and probably going to sit in an album in the SDB for a decade or so, viewed once in a while in the interim.
I'm done shopping for this date, and peace dollars in general, now pretty happy with my raw set, most coins are MS62-65
