I have been looking for this CBH for five years!

lkeigwinlkeigwin Posts: 16,893 ✭✭✭✭✭
And I finally found it. I've never been so patient my whole life.

Bummer the PCGS holder says 1825. image There goes the CAC sticker too.

Sweet. That exact coin or this date for 5 years? So the holder is wrong and there is also a CAC sticker on it? That is whacked!

That year and grade in a die marriage I don't have. Yeah, interesting CAC stickered it even with the wrong date. I didn't know they'd do that.

Would this not be a mechanical error? PCGS should put this in a holder with the right date at no charge and CAC should do the same

They CAC'd the coin and the holder. I expect they put a note in their database that the coin is really an 1822. The probably went by the description on the holder in order to get it into their census. You may want to send them full slab pics so they resticker it if/when PCGS fixes it. Even if it comes back to them fixed, they will probably regrade it.

    Awesome looking O-108a Lance! Congrats!!!

Looks to be a PQ 58 IMO and perhaps a 62 on a good day!

    Where did she finally surface?

When you said searching for 5 years and then I saw the coin I said to myself this is a gorgeous ms64 that is in an AU58 holder. Thats what I would be looking for- a coin that has the appeal of a 63/64 in an AU58 holder
    Low and behold....

By the usual MS61-MS64 CBH standards, that coin is uncirculated. Worse case it's an AU-63. Cheek, clasp, hair curls, field luster all look MS63. NGC would almost certainly grade that mint state. Could be a great candidate for an everyman 58+. If it's a technical AU.....it's every bit of a 58++.

Nice coin. Tough to find an 1822 like that isn't it?

Note the flatness on the curl underneath the Y in Liberty. Also a little rub on the right knee (viewed as left) of the eagle.
A couple of other marks may show the coin to be AU but its as AU/63/64 as you can get in my opinion

  • What a beautiful coin. Are you going to get it fixed? I am surprised that it has a bean on it considering the mechanical error. Well not really that surprised as they just had to see it to know it is deserving and may not have paid all that much attention to the date because of your ladies beauty.

No clue how that's only an AU58, I can't see it. Awesome coin for sure!

That's a monster coin to have a date-wrong label....no clue how that could have happened. Wonder if there is a '25 sitting in a msX '22 holder somewhere....

  • Great coin Lance! There is a reason why you couldn't find one the way you wanted it. It is the #2 toughest R3 on my list.

    Toughest Common D/M's

There have been a grand total of 3 MS and 3 AU examples appearing for sale (problem free that is) the last 10 years.

The O-108 has only had an NGC AU50 appear and that was early this month from that fellow nut selling his collection (The other AU's are details coins).

The O-108a appears to be more common, with 3 MS and 2 AU examples.

If your purchase is from an open market sale of some sort PM me with the details and I will add it to my records!

It would appear to me that this rarity rating may be a candidate for revision....

    Great coin!

Have you been looking for "one like that" for five years, or have you been trying to locate that specific coin that you knew about but wanted to find and buy?

    << <i>Great coin!

Thanks, guys. I appreciate the feedback and nice words.

I wasn't looking/waiting for this specific coin. Just an appealing 58 for that year in a die marriage I don't have. I saw more than a dozen over the years but none I liked and it was discouraging.

Anyway, today she is off for a holder fix.

I've been reluctant to submit nice AU58's for regrading. I have 50 or 60 in the series and surely some are MS. But I'd rather have an undergraded 58 than a 60 or 61. (My sense is that most nice 58's -- absent significant flaws -- that are really MS would earn 62/63, if they upgraded. Which would put them close in market value. But then my focus might change and MS bust halves scare me a little.)

I have done regrades on 55's and 53's and maybe 25% have upgraded. None dropped. My AU50's and 45's are at PCGS now and I'm hoping to get lucky with some of the scarcer ones.
    Lance.
