Drunner's Portland ANA -- Yeah, long. What of it?

DRUNNERDRUNNER Posts: 3,946 ✭✭✭✭✭
(Transcribed digital audiotape found in Security during post-show clean-up and forwarded to me) :

. . . . (previous tape garbled . . . picks up at 13:07 hours Friday) . . .

Swampboy: Naw . . . that can't be him!

Meltdown: Really! It says right here the table number. He posted it on that old Portland thread. It's got to be him!

Swampboy: Impossible. Flat out wrong. I did the research on the old threads. He says it's "D-Runner" . . . like 'distance runner'. That dude is old and pushing 3 bills easy. If he's a runner then I married Kate Upton! We got the wrong table!

Winston: Look . . . Swamper. You go up and see. If that porker is Drunner I swear I'll buy Richie's toner Lincoln for you. Just go schmooze him! Tell him you'd like to see that SEGS MS64 56-D Jeffie he's got listed for $80. I've watched him . . . . he'll . .

Meltdown: TALK YOUR EAR OFF !!!!

Winston: Um, yeah. I was gonna say that. I've watched him. Come on Swamper . . . how bad could it be? If it is him, just let him ramble, then we'll call you on your cell! You can just tell him your wife's gone into labor! You can bolt! I just gotta know. Is it him? That guy is fat enough to have his own gravity field!

Swampboy: OK. I'll take this for the team. (static) . . . . to meet you! Are yo . . . . no, you are just what I . . . . (static) . . ot who I thought . . . (static) CGS Forum, we have been talking of . . . . .ight Watchers, and an intervention . . . Is that a . . . .(static) . . . large pizza?

(Tape ends at a timestamp of 13:10 hours.)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Esteemed Forumites:

Yes, I am burying a few actual numismatic nuggets and genuinely serious observations deeply within the confines of this diatribe, but without pix, I can't even get up to double digit responses to any thread I ever post (or maybe that's because I bore people, can't write, and have the numismatic magnetism of a soap dish). I just think of Charmy's exquisite show reports and wonder, "Why would I post anything about any show she attended anyway? Do I really think I'm going to usurp her presentation? Will I shatter the coin world with my unique and prescient observations that will totally revolutionize collecting philosophy?"

Ummmmmm . . . . . . . . . . . . no.

OK. First the stuff for those who are already hot over the fact I started a thread that took precious bandwidth and rambled, as I took from them time that they could have been selecting a smoking jacket and deciding on the 18 yr. Laphroaig or the more crisp 12 year Macallan. I took a third of a corner table with Bob White (ex-Bradley's Coins in Portland, now some metals place) and Stu Gresch, an ex-Delta driver and we can talk a bit of F-4 dirty engine talk. I had a wonderful parent-teacher conference day Wednesday (I'd rather get hemorrhoids tied) so I got the thrill of arriving in Portland from my abode in the City of Salt around noon on Thursday. I looked around, and it seemed to me (heaven forbid if I err) you could have shot a rifle in any direction and not hit anything in the aisles. Seemingly slow. Nay . . . dead? I soon realized I had missed the obligatory dealer 'rush' to pick me off for all my gems I had listed for double face, and now I would settle in for a show with 'interesting' advertisement, no onsite grading, and a minimal auction. Again, my observations only. Yours may be different. Objects may be closer than they appear!

Some sales. I hauled Type up and did a bit of random business, and had a chance to pump up the public a bit. Fun! I love the people in the Pacific Northwest. All that rain seems to make them decide to open up and enjoy the great . . . . indoors. Good people! Much different than the 'Stepford Wives' culture I live with here in my sainted city. I am primarily a collector as some know. The 'other side of the table' is fun once in a while and I do the Florence and Lincoln City shows but not even anything here locally -- it has to do with my buddy Bob there in Portland. As he ages, he metes out wisdom and I mete out humor. Decent trade.

Saturday, after I dragged Bob out of bed (not together mind you -- NOT THAT THERE IS ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT !!!) -- I get to stay at his home when I travel to Portland -- I was met at the show by the quite charming -- Charmy!! She had seen a nice half cent in my case, but upon flipping it over and seeing the carved graffiti "Why would you pass it from the 1 yd. line???", she passed as it was a damaged coin. I told her "I wanted our first meeting to be a bit different!" Yes -- I have worshipped from afar, and have an EXQUISITE wine collection I have wanted to share -- but the time has never been right. I have requested "Stairway to Heaven" on her stereo (does that date me?), and will be bringing the wine to Vegas next week. Dang !!! I needed her to be 'impressed' !!! Having her see my crappy half cent and stammering . . ."Ummmmm . . thanks, but it isn't exactly what I need," was not quite the numismatic introduction I had dreamed about. Not fault for her.

But . . I digress (HA--REALLY ?????)

On Friday, I was treated, yes, honestly treated, to a meeting of the numismatic minds that has rarely convened. Swampboy, Meltdown, Winston, and Realone ventured up and I have NEVER had so much fun. I don't travel the numismatic world like those guys do, so for me, it was an extremely special treat. Worth the flight up. We laughed, made fun of Realone, and I completely covered up Meltdown in all the pics with my (shall we say) larger midsection. Coins, humor, wit (not from me), and my admiration for the Board contributions from this group -- well -- it made my trip. Gentlemen, I was honored to meet you!

As the pics have circulated (ha, a coin reference) on the Boards, I was treated to Lakes "Box of Twenty", which really was just 8 or 9 coins, and yes, guys like this just have a way of deflating an entire show. Holy cripemunchers! The STELLA. Really Tim? Uh, yeah. Then the other super Doilies (doggone it Astro -- I wish you would have let me corner all four of those Jeffie Doilies and keep a leg up on him !!!) Wow. I loved to see them, and it let me know that in the Doily Type market, I may be battling to stay afloat. Cool Trade -- cool Doilies, and that STELLA! Yes Tim, I shot 4 over yesterday at Mountain Dell (Lakes course--for you), and I do believe we'll play for that Trade Dollar some day !!!!! Ping Eye-2 Irons and a Pal-4 putter that bombs them in from all over the green!

OK . . perhaps enough?

Well. Almost.

Yup. I had a toner there. Todd shot it, Ron Sirna and Rich got a chance to see it, and it is . . . well . . . interesting. Sort of slowing down on it. It is fresh. Local guy here had it since the silver dollar releases in the 1960s. Old Cap Plastic holder and it is . . . . decent looking. Many comparisons to the 'named' dollars in two major collections. It is certainly NOT a Ricko coin (although both of us share an affinity for 1911-frame hunks of iron). Perhaps I can get some pics posted at a later date.

OK . . . Ron, Rich, our superb Forum quartet, several other Forumites I have not mentioned specifically, Lakes (so fun to see you), Todd, (who has photos rivalling anything in the numismatic world at any level), Charmy (such a joy -- but our official meeting will be Vegas), and that smelly skateboarder I gave a buck to outside the convention center -- you all made my show memorable.

I consider myself so lucky to be schooled here, schooled at those major shows, and to count as friends numismatists of varying financial investment, but all of intense passion for the hobby and a genuine interest in seeing this 'hobby of Kings' continue to be the hobby we all can enjoy.

Bravo to you all . . . thanks you so much . . . and I look forward to our next chance to meet!

Drunner

Great report BTW, and I agree also about the 1911. It is form & function perfected.

    We shall . . . . .

Epic event. I don't like to be just one of the crowd. I hope this will be a numismatic "Nobel Prize" event . . . .

Anyone who can join us in Vegas -- the wine is destined to be either the ultimate, or vinegar. Charmy will determine. She will determine the opening of the bottle. One from the deepest reaches of my cabinet . .

image Sometimes it is more about the people than the coins. When you can combine good experiences with both, you have a major win!

Sounds like a great time I would have enjoyed. Congrats. image
