1986 Green Monster Box of Silver Eagles

Hey Guys;
I am writing and asking all your opinions on buying a 1986 Green Monster box of Silver Eagles that has never been open. What do you think of the price of >$8900.00 plus they want a $100.00 for shipping. I would love to buy it, and I do have the money. But I have a bad feeling about the price. What do you all think and what is the potential for making some money down the road a few years from now? What do you all think??????????
Thanks again in advance

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
I'm not sure what retail is, but keep in mind that when you go to sell you're probably going to get closer to wholesale unless you sell them off a roll at a time. Most collectors don't want 500 of the same date ASE.
Generally I think it's a bad investment compared to other things you could do with $9000.
If you are mostly interested in the investment potential of government-backed silver (also a bad idea IMO

I’m right on board with Goose3 , I never like to pay retail and if I’m buying 500 coins I do expect to get some kind of break. Plus that Chattanooga Coin Company >isn’t that the guy that used to have the Coin Vault show on TV?<>
The only reason at all that brought my attention to this is the potential of the unopened boxes and possibilities of getting some MS 70’s and 69’s too.

Do you know how long it takes to go through 500 coins ? PCGS MS69 sell for around $50. So you have $18 cost per coin, then add $15.00 for grading fees, and a few more bucks for postage to and from, plus the insurance, shipped registered mail, and this comes to about $40.00 per MS69, IF you get any at all.
Then you sell it on Ebay, and they take about $4.00 total for the add, so know you have $6.00 per MS69. So lets say you get 5% or 25 coins that grade PCGS MS 69, at $6.00 each, and you have made about $150.00 for your time. If you look at a 1 coin a minute, that is 500 minutes, or about 8.5 hours. $150 is not bad money for 8.5 hours work.....IF...... you get 5% or 25 coins that do make a MS 69. Even just a couple of MS 68's and you have cut into your pocket book bad.
Now figure that this green monster has 500 Troy OZ's in it. with 12 Troy OZ's to the pound, that is about 42 pounds. Then add the wieght of the case and you are looking at 45-50 pounds. Everytime these have been shipped or moved by a NON COIN person, they probably got slammed around, now for 17 years.
IF .....you was thinking about keeping them in the sealed box, for an invesrment, one of 2 things has to happen before you really make any money on them. One is that silver goes way up. The next is that 1986 Silver Eagles go way up, either BU or PCGS Graded.
If you notice in the add, those aren't PCGS MS70 Slabs Either ! PCGS has a pop of 3, 1986 MS70's and haven't graded a MS 70 Silver Eagle is quite some time, with only 11, MS 70's out of the entire series.
I hope this helps you make decision easier for you to make now.
I agree with the idea that you could do better with a $9,000 investment, but to each thier own.

There is also big risk when you open the box all the coins are ugly. That happened to me on a box of 1995 silver eagles. I immediately lost $1 a coin because there was nothing worth grading. On this deal if the batch is bad your probably only gong to be able to get $12 a coin which means you'll lose $3,000. The Coin Dealer Newsletter lists bid at $12.85 and you'll to discount the coins to sell them. That's where get the $12 a coin. I'd stay away from this deal.
Sorry for that last enter without any text, anyhow thanks HoundDog & THE rest of you Guys You all broke it down for me. Again the members here have guided me in the right direction. Sometimes I don't know what I would do without all your help. Again thanks for all your advise, I always seem to do the right thing if I listen to my gut feelings. And come here for some input :-)
Thanks

Your thinking is correct. Lewis Revels was the guy from Chattanooga that used to do Coin Vault.
Really fun to comb through these old posts. Could you imagine what these would bring today?
Yep, about $18 each.
👍👌If you find a sealed monster box of 1986 ASes for 18 each you let me know 🙄@blitzdude said:
Fun to read these old threads from time to time..... certainly a different perspective seventeen years later. I am sure that monster box has long since been opened....However, even today, I am not sure it would be a worthwhile investment. Cheers, RickO
had the OP bought this in 2002 and sold it in 2012 at the right time he would have come close to tripling his money.
Not so long ago GS bid was $50.00.
