1804 Ebay. Years in the making...

ssPageName=STRK%3AMEDWX%3AIT&_trksid=p2047675.l2557&nma=true&si=UiJhk8XWiHELwou8eyRKqrJpM8o%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc">1804...an old friend

This one is sentimental to me. I can't believe it sold. I then looked and he has been listing this crap for many months..... I can't believe this took me so long.
Here is my connection. This old bat had this EXACT coin in this EXACT same flap back in 2011. I was spent a few months in Seattle for business. I put a few ads online that I was a new collector in the area and if anybody had coins or coin questions to contact me. This hag contacted me and said he had an old dollar and we just happened to be with in 30 minutes of one another. He said he had no camera. I asked if he could take picture with his phone but said it was a land-line. He genuinely seemed like a very old grandpa type. I said ok.
When I got there he was younger than I expected (55 or so maybe). He took this EXACT same little brown envelope he put on Ebay. When I say that envelope on Ebay I cracked out laughing.
When I FIRST saw this envelope I had a small heart attack. He said his parents were world travelers and when I read that envelope I almost died. I thought maybe I was going to have the find of the decade in coins. I told him before I opened it this would be a major coin and I would have to probably sell a lot of my bullion to pay him for it.

It (as you can see) was a fake. Not one of the usually Chinese 'crooked nose' ones but still an obvious fake with some inspection. I explained this to him and went over all the reasons why. He seemed totally 'uhh' and just basically rushed me out. Fast forward a month later and I see he put this on Craigslist and this time the story was gifted this coin from an old neighbor. Wait a minute. I was pissed. I used an email to set up a meeting at a bank and when he saw me show up he said "Hi" and I told him off and he just sort of took it. He is the most dispassionate con I've never run into. He was like grey paint.

Sorry again for one of my typical 'stories' of coin scams. Whether by ignorance or bad luck I have had about 100 lifetimes of coin scams.

Please flag this so HOPEFULLY we can stop this before it happens. I know we can't stop scams and anybody thinking they are getting a real 1804 Dollar for $500 on Ebay is a huge fool but at the same time scams like this hurt us all.

I flagged it and hope you do as well. I also sent an Ebay message to my old friend; I'm sure he remembers me.

Edit:
I fixed link. I keep screwing that up sorry.
Flag away..........
I have plans....sometimes

    Let's fix that link, first.

I wonder why people bid on this stuff?

If I listed a Mona Lisa painting, would people bid millions in the thought that it was an original Da Vinci? (As you probably know, the one in the Louvre is not the only one. But I doubt anyone would be so stupid as to assume that one would be for sale. Yet they do it all the time with 1804 dollars and 1913 Liberty nickels. I wonder why.)

Nice provenance. Always fun when you can trace a coin's origin. Yuck.

Funny thing is, the underbidder was also a scammer... trying to scam this scammer. No joke.

    Ha ha.
You want to know something sad? If this guy would give me the coin for like $15 bucks I would buy it just cause of the history I have with it.

Probably change their mind someday if it's sent for grading or try to sell it.

  • I wonder when it was counterfeited as it appears struck. It is showing some cart wheel type luster. That would make a neat coin for me to make into a coin ring.
