I've been a numismatist since you were in diapers!

LakesammmanLakesammman Posts: 17,660 ✭✭✭✭✭
So said a new acquaintance I met at a flea market this weekend.

Said he'd been a numismatist for 45 years.

I didn't have the heart to tell him I started 50 years ago, spending my allowance at the bank on silver coins when clad coins first came out. image

Edited to add the 2nd sentence - forgot to add that part. image

It could have been worse, my dad was barely out of diapers when you started collecting. image

I'm not sure that would be a credential I would be proud of unless the numismatic organizations vouched for him. If he is so renowned how many articles and books did he write, how has he given back to the hobby, how do his fellow dealers regard him? EGO = "ease God out".

"I've been a numismatist since you were in diapers!" . . . likely means the quoted will soon be in diapers again.

I agree wholeheartedly except I'll still try to listen more carefully if anyone claims to be speaking from experience; then I'll dismiss it.

Even though the story keeps changing, you should not talk to Lakes that way.

Was he a numismatist or a coin collector? They aren't necessarily the same thing.

He didn't have a single coin at his table. You can imagine how long the conversation lasted. image

I might have bumped into you at the bank back then 50 years ago. I didn't realize it had been 50 years since I was searching rolls for silver and Lincoln cents until I read this post (I'm 58). Those were great days, and a great time for roll searching.
