Look what's coming to Long Beach!

In addition to the United States Mint setting up a booth at this week's (January 29 - 31, 2015) Long Beach Expo, you'll see the first West Coast appearance of the only 1822 Half Eagle not in the Smithsonian's National Numismatic Collection.

I thought for sure this was going to be a thread about my 1931-D Merc in PCGS MS67FB at the Great Collections table. Oh well, I guess the 1822 $5 is cool.

I wonder why more are not extant..... if three were in public hands, how did they get out there? I see that many were supposed to be melted, but obviously not all.... there should be more.... Cheers, RickO

i believe that most of them did not circulate but were minted and held by banks for depositors of gold. once gold increased in value, they were melted.
