Two hours of rummaging at the show ...

mirabelamirabela Posts: 5,197 ✭✭✭✭✭
Took the long drive to the Westford, MA show today with my kids. Son was looking for a nice collector grade Type 1 SLQ and found a beautiful raw, original XF45 coin that he'll be proud to own years from now. Daughter cruised cases and boxes for hours and came away with a Seattle Worlds Fair token with the Space Needle.

I examined many things, and came away with just one. So hard to capture the liquid honey pastel look of this with the camera ... anyway, an addition to the collection that I'm tickled about.

Jeff, you don't know how happy this made him. We gave dozens of candidates the once-over, but the one he found -- wow.

That's some full stepper there. Most of the time I have to squint to see even 4-5 steps on a well struck Jeff. That one appears to have every step showing. Nice pick up...especially if you cherry picked it.

Total agreement. And he's been studying, too, trying to learn the history and the people and how the coinage correlates to what was happening in the world. It's such a good hobby ...

As for the nickel, this is not a cherrypicked full stepper, but a proof. I've had some fun hunting these early Jefferson proofs for a few years now. There really aren't all that many of them around, and still fewer that are nice to look at. I think the picture captures the colors to some extent, but it amplifies the specks about a thousand times and completely misses the mirrors. It's a straight up no-question gem, and it knocked my socks off when I saw it in the case -- I literally let out a whoop that had people three tables over looking up to see what was wrong. And for a thing with a mintage of ~17,000 and a look like this, it was almost comically inexpensive.

I saw it was a proof from get-go, nice pick-up!

The more qualities observed in a coin, the more desirable that coin becomes!
